Yes... all related to the very general term: debug. RS-232 console ports are usually used for debug... So again, sticking by my original assertion: debug.

Actually, to me a better term than debug would be: development or developer

My original use of "output", as in "debug output" was certainly off, where I should have used "port" or "i/o". How about the even more generic "serial console port", even though its main purpose is likely for debugging, by, yes, developers. |

I agree that most likely that port is used for debugging purposes, but remember we're looking at a reference design, not a finished product, and that port will most likely be removed on shipping consumer hardware. What I'd like to see is a Sage-powered GoogleTV box that would connect to our existing Sage servers (as-is, or with a server software upgrade), with more than one company producing them. You could purchase a Sony, Logitech, or whoever GooSage extender, gaining all the streaming capabilities we've all been wanting, along with the placeshifting/Sage goodness we're used to...
A lot of people think the pictures of the 'fishtank' box pictures we've seen is what the shipping product will look like, but I can tell you from past experience (I was a pre-beta tester for WMC, and the reference WMC Client box they shipped me definitely didn't look like any of the products that wound up for sale when they were released). I'd hazard a guess that the shipping boxes will be smaller (hopefully HD300 in size), or even have other options like say a bluray/dvd drive included in the box (wouldn't that be great, a lot of people around here would love that combo). Don't take any offense from my better term comment, I'm just sitting here bored waiting on Charter tech support to show up to fix my connection finally...

Of course, there will be many different versions of the system, from different manufactures -- so who knows what it will look like. Not at all. Last edited by brainbone; 06-24-2011 at 04:04 PM. |

This is the current GoogleTV device (thats not a TV or BluRay/DVD player). This uses the EXACT SAME reference design as "Fishtank" (granted it is in a pruttyfied case and gussied up plastics and has no RS-232 port). Logitech has stated that it is not releasing another piece of hardware and will continue selling this. However, they are going to release a update to Android 3.1 sometime around late August. This will add the android market and maybe GoogleTV 2.0. From what I can tell, this device is nothing more than a over glorified media player. It can play media on network shares and has a "pass-thru" and ir blaster to control a stb for playback of live tv. Im tempted to buy one, but at $250 a pop, i donno...... |

Amazon has it for $218 and I've heard that Fry's was selling them for $179. The Revue is definitely getting an update to what people are referring to as "GoogleTV 2.0" which amounts to an Android update to 3.1 (Honeycomb), Android Market access (i.e. apps), and an overhauled UI.

If one were to look closely at the screen shots of the back of the Fishtank reference designs (you probably need to blow up the shots) you'll see that there is an antenna port on the back of the box.
The screen shots I'm referring to were originally published at greek.com and referenced at gigaom. It might just be that the reference design is using a generic box that already had space for an antenna jack (as well as a hole for an oddly-shaped DVB-T port). Or it might be that there's a plan to handle OTA broadcasts in Fishtank.
