GoogleTV 2.0 the new Sage?

Found this over at Phandroid, notice the LiveTV button, wonder if it's using the Sage backend?

http://phandroid.com/2011/06/22/a-fi...-of-google-tv/

I'd love to get a comment from either Google or Narflex on that, if that's the direction Sage is going, and it works with a local server (not just a link back into google), I'll sign up for that..

*EDIT* Looks like other similar articles were posted on the other thread here, so just ignore me, and I'll go back to sleep, lol.

IMO GoogleTV will be the new extender and SageTV will be renamed to Google Media Center with DRM and cable card support. Google will not make or sell hardware, but will get other companies to like they do with cell phones, tablets and GoogleTV devices.

Here's my two cents and it maybe worth a lot less than that but here goes...

Boxee does media playback of your media stored on your server/pc and online content, Netflix, no DVR.

XBMC does media playback of your media stored on your server/pc and online content, Netflix, no DVR.

Appletv does media playback of your media via Itunes, Netflix, no DVR.

Cable companies all seem to be going towards these new whole home setups with content playing back in all rooms from the main DVR with facebook, twitter, PPV etc... where by the look of it you will be able to record a show and then view it on any device in your home, whether it be a phone, tablet, PC, STB on another TV. No integrated Netflix cause that doesn't make them money.

None of these placeshift like good old Sagetv either (that I have noticed)

So if Google wants to take a crack at all of the above covering all the bases they would need to come up with something that can ,

1. provides a way to playback media stored on your server/pc in all it's HD goodness (DVD/BR rips).
2. provides online content like Youtube etc...
3. provides Netflix/Hulu type content through "apps"
4. provides DVR functions for HDTV (Satellite/Cable) content.
4. provides a "placeshifting" function (like slingbox etc)

Do all this and have the client apps on TV's (ala Samsung Netflix app) and hardware like HD300+ (or the Googletv 2.0 hardware like linked above) and then sell apps for phones and tablets, PC's etc...

Ideally they would give away the "server" DVR/Media Center software that gets your content accessable and charge for the "apps" for playback or devices themselves.

I can dream can't I

J

Yeah, I had similar thoughts. And if they have a web browser in each extender, that can cut the need of many households of having to have multiple computers. Put the new Google media center into ChromeOS and suddenly Google has your whole house, cutting out MS and Apple.

I like the way Jorton's thinking... but the DVR part is the big puzzle isn't it? How far would Google go for tuner support? Would a media server for the home be something they are interested in... unless they can control and track everything that's on it, how often something is played back etc.?

And please no cloud. Don't care about that. I always thought the idea of millions of people uploading their identically ripped collections of Beatles libraries idiotic and wasteful of resources.

Probably why the iOS 5 music service offers to match music from iTunes, so they can avoid wasting space.

I'm thinking it would be like a software slingbox server on a pc with tuners that could record all your shows and feed them to all sorts of clients (different bit rates for different devices and connections) at home or on the road etc...

No cloud just your DVR'ed media and your video/music library that can be served to devices or pc clients etc.

Or not

First look at Google TV 2.0 ‘Fishtank’ (from Geek.com)

FYI - don't know if this is interesting or not.

I see the RS-232 port. Isn't that used for controlling some satellite/cable boxes?

Being a development platform, it's probably for debug output.

It'd be nice if they'd post some screenshots of the live-tv feature in-use. Then we could see if it's sage-like or not :P.

I don't see any way from a business perspective that SageTV UI or other technology is rolled into Google TV 2.0. This was previewed a while ago. As I said in my other post, I am thinking more like Google TV 3.0.

We all know how fast things move at a company like Google. Some engineer comes up with an idea, presents it to management, it has to go through the patenting process, be prototyped and approved, market tested, and then scheduled into a release. Give it a year or more and then see what emerges.

How many modern standalone media players out there have an exposed RS-232 port? Many have an internal RS-232 header, or solder-pads for a header -- and in these cases, those RS-232 ports are used for ... debug.

It could be for something else, but I'll stick by my original assertion: Probably for debug.
