Moving to new PC, why not copy .properties file?

I am finally upgrading to windows 7, so I need to move my copy of sagetv. I have a licensed version of 6 (with the 7 upgrade files, thanks narflex).

I read the FAQ, and understand how to do the move to preserve all my recordings. What I don't understand is why can't I move the .properties files? If I don't, wont I have to reinstall all the plugins, etc??

any help/insight appreciated.

Device IDs. Device IDs for tuners will more than likely change between OS's. Not as critical (because you could just edit the file) could be paths (UNC paths that contain the machine name.)if the machine name changes. And yes. You would run thru the Configuration Wizard to configure your tuners and EPG. And yes- reinstall the plugins. It does give you the opportunity of a clean install with no remnants from your previous version installs and plugins.

There is an export channel lineup plugin. I've been wondering if that works well. I'm about to do the same so I'd rather not have to redo the qam I just got working (that and the crapload of useless DirecTV channels).

I've used it quite a bit. It's fantastic.

I'm sitting in the same boat right now, sort of. My WHS OS drive crashed and I'm rebuilding the server from scratch. Once I get the OS installed and the shares restored I'll be doing a fresh install of Sage as well.

I'm also wondering if there is a way to take the tuner config from one of my Sage install backups and import it into this new install. In my case, the system is exactly the same components, same tuner, same OS. So is there anyway to use the .properties from an old backup to restore tuner mappings without having to go through the whole mapping process again.

Any suggestions on the if this possible or not? Or am I stuck re-mapping QAM channels again...

Thanks.

Right, that references a channel EXPORT plugin. That would imply that I have a working Sage system to export from and then a new one to import into. Unforutunately, I don't have a working system in this case, I only have a backup of the sage folder.

Perhaps I'm not understanding how this utility works. Does it have the ability to IMPORT from a .properties file as well?

It creates it's own export and import files.
