windows 8 & Phoenix

Brand new windows 8 7.1.9 client installed and working 100% fine.
I install Phoenix and afterward the client no longer loads -- hangs on "Initializing UI"....
Remove Phoenix and all is well again.

Not sure how to fix?!

Is it possible that somehow Phoenix require port/firewall configuration in addition to the default SageTV Ui client?

When Phoenix starts up, it will pull down the x-vfs.xml file if it is missing. (It's installed when you install Phoenix UI, so it only does this if you are using phoenix-core and not the ui)

I would try the "repair" tool that posted earlier to see if that fixes your problem. I've seen this happen when the jars are not extracted correctly.

I know in my case I had to run the client once with the shortcut run as administrator to get phoenix to install properly it would not create the phoenix folder ... otherwise.

I have a Win 7 Phoenix client as well. It works just fine though I think it is on a slightly older version of Phoenix.

I ran the 'repair tool' on the Phoenix server (which is up to date with the latest Phoenix). Seemed to work fine. The Win 7 Phoenix client still works after the repair too.

I decided to take some steps on the Win 8 Phoenix client. First I installed fresh and added SageMC which depends on BMT. That works fine but it would log an error on the server that it was missing the vfs-dtd file. I copied the vfs-did from the win 7 Phoenix client to the win 8 phoenix client and the error disappeared.

Then I installed the phoenix client on the win 8 machine and it hangs on UI intialization / startup ( no idea why)

One note I did customize the menus before and vfs on the win 7 client and the sagetv server. But don't see how this would affect the win 8 client since that is independent ( local to each machine).

Is it possible to run the repair script on the win 8 client or is that only for the Phoenix server? What other steps can I take to get some data on what is going on for you?

I tried to run the sagetvclient.exe directly 'run as administrator' but that seems to hang sagetvclient (not sure why win 8 doesn't like that).... Works fine when run normally (a user with admin rights). This is true regardless of the Phoenix client (meaning the Phoenix client isn't even installed at that point).

The Phoenix directory is created - that's how I copied the vfs-dtd to it.

Install of Phoenix client didn't complain. I then loaded the stv for Phoenix (didnt look right - all black with menus in white). I quit SageTV thinking a restart would help. And then on restart of sagetv it hangs.

I don't use full blown clients, myself, but if a client is like the server in that plugins are downloaded installed locally to the client and extracted in the client area, and as a result the client has a JARs area for jars and a STVs area for the STVs, then yes, the repair would work just the same. All the "repair" tool does is fetch all the dependencies and re-extracts the files and it will crap out if it can't complete everything. So when it's done, you basically have a refreshed state for phoenix (and its dependencies).

Correct - the SageTV client has a similar STV folder structure. I will give the repair tool a shot. Can I infer that the Phoenix client is no different from the Phoenix server in terms of jars and files?

Is there a way for me to get Phoenix to produce a log fille etc to debug?
What do you recommend?

The first time I load the STV within SageTVClient Phoenix works fine.
But once I exit SageTV and start again it hangs.

On a hunch (looking at the error message) I replaced the Phoenix jar (v 2.3.58 ) the Windows 8 client with the Phoenix jar on the Windows 7 client (v2.3.49 ) and now SageTVClient loads just fine.

Clearly there is some issue with the new phoenix.jar ....

Is it ok to use this old jar in the meantime? Or will that create other kinds of issues?

There are almost 10 releases between those 2 jar versions. I can't even begin to guess what the effect of that will be.

I tested every jar from 2.3.58 down to 2.3.47 and the only jar that runs is the 2.3.47.

I also tried both Java 6 and Java 7 ... same result.

This is with a clean 7.1.9 install with STV updates to the default only.
No other plugin other than Phoenix is installed.

Windows 8 x86.

Can you look into what is going on?

So as far as I can tell... only Phoenix 409 installs and runs without issue.

The other versions all install and load the first time correctly ('load STV' under detailed settings... but then on restart they all hang with the error:

I wonder if you can clean out the logs directory, and then do your startup test again, and send me the phoenix.log.

There is nothing unusual in the sagetv_tv log that you posted.

The changes from 47 to 50 were very extensive. Basically 2.3.50 added the new weather apis, and upnp client/server libraries. I wonder if either of those are causing your issue for the client. The upnp stuff should be disabled by default, but it's still in there. And the weather apis may try to connect out to the internet, not sure, although I thought if it did so, it does it in the background.

Sounds like any of those updates could be the culprit. What is interesting is that if I load the Phoenix STV from the default STV it works fine until I restart. I guess that suggests that the thread is somehow blocked on startup.

Is there any way to disable each of those from the .properties file so that I can isolate?

The upnp stuff should be disabled by default anyways. And the weather, i'm pretty sure, runs in the background.... and I don't think that you can turn it off. I cold start phoenix several times a day, and I've never seen this myself, but I;ve never tried on Windows 8. I'm not sure if there are other Windows 8 users that can weigh in on this... you may be stuck until we get more people using Windows 8

I tried installing the Phoenix UI on a fairly fresh install of Windows 8 Pro 64bit and had the same result, first load of the Phoenix.xml file was fine but then hangs on a restart. The splash screen hangs at "User Interface Manager is initializing" so I had to kill the process and then edit the sage client properties file to load the default sagetv7.xml file (or Gemstone.xml) to get it to load again. Which seems odd as Gemstone is using a lot of the same code now (API/VFS).

I'll try to do a bit more testing and post the results.

On a new Windows 7 HP 64bit install I am having the same issue. Hangs at "User Interface Manager is initializing" and the log is the same as previously posted.

This is with the latest Sagetv Client 7.19, latest Phoenix API 2.59 etc with a fresh install of the Phoenix UI.

Not sure but doesn't look to be just limited to Windows 8???

Anything else I should look for?

For me, this is happening on a phoenix client install on the full sagetv software client on windows 8. I have a second phoenix client running phoenix 409 with the full sagetv software client on windows 7 x23 which works fine - didnt try using the latest phoenix on this machine since I was concerned the same thing would happen (which apparently it does given jorton's comments below).

On my SageTV server I have the Phoenix server installed but not the STV. I am using the standard STV.
