Wish We Knew More
Title says it all. I wish we knew more about what was going on with Google and SageTV. In particular if Google is going to eventually allow separate software distribution outside Google Fiber.
Every day I come on the forums and see activity getting less and less. I know there are still quite a few people using SageTV but it is still disconcerting to see the the public talk waning and drifting away as time drags on since Google's purchase of our beloved product. If there never comes a publicly available new version of SageTV I personally will continue to use the current version until it no longer works or something truly better is there to replace it. Still very sad to see the community here drift away.

Agreed.
I haven't heard anything beyond what is public on Google Fiber. I would love to see them take the TV piece and make it something you could get outside of Google Fiber. That being said, I do think Google is very serious about expanding Google Fiber well beyond it's current locations. At that might help out some SageTV folks out there. |

Here in Oklahoma City aside from satellite we have either Cox Cable or AT&T U-Verse. And the latter only if its available to your area of the city. It would be awsome to have another choice if only to shake up the duopoly we have here as prices continue to rise year after year even though the service really hasn't gotten any better or more compelling.
I've made our first step toward cutting the cable for tv a few weeks ago when I bought an antenna. Transitioned our locals to record from the antenna rather than cable and in the process discovered that Cox compresses them more. The only thing that's really stopping us from cutting the Cox cord is the fact that my wife enjoys channel surfing. Otherwise we probably would.

I think the TV part of Google Fiber is something the bigs in Google are still "figuring out". It is definitely there to entice the regular folk to want Google Fiber - something beyond just faster internet. But it has a lot of potential for them beyond the fiber product if they want to use it. I'll be watching to see what they do with media streaming and Google TV. Could be the "SageTV inside" could rear it's head beyond fiber or.... it could just continue as it is. It's just too difficult to tell at this point until Google decides to do something publicly with TV other than the Google Fiber TV.

I don't care about google fiber, but would love to see them give away the last version of the client, or better yet, the extender firmware.

Without knowing their intentions I would be very, very surprised if they did anything like that. My guess if they've done all they will do with SageTV as it stands. Anything new will come from Google aka google fiber TV or something like it.

Google fiber might be the only way to get sagetv, but paying for live tv is something I won't do. Sage's appeal for me was the had a strong community adding to it, and it could record from anything. With fiber, at least half of that appeal is now gone. |
