Wish I knew several months ago what I know today... (or: Move recordings?)

SageTV works great with Ceton and Cablecard! At this point in time I'm not sure if this makes me happy or sad, but...

My question now is, is there an easy way to move recordings from my old SageTV 6 server over to the new one? For example, the 500 episodes of COPS I have recorded on it???? Further, if so, is there a way to do it so Sage knows what the episodes are? Meaning they won't record duplicates?

I've decided (since I'm a thousand dollars into this box) to hope for the best and stick with SageTV (like there's another decent option out there anyway) and hope that the community keeps it going, if google doesn't!

Thoughts?

I've used the web interface to export an xml file from the old servers recordings, then use the same interface on the new to do the import. You might have to modify the xml a bit for path differences, so a good text editor that can do search and replace is necessary.

Maybe upgrade the old server to version 7, then copy the old HD to the new one?

i'm assuming you have two distinctly separate wiz.bin files?

i just switched back from SageTV server for Macintosh to the Windows version 6.6. With a fresh Windows SageTV install, it was as easy as copying the wiz.bin file over and point it to the existing drives (benefit of recording to a NAS) it took about 5 minutes to start up the first time (parsing the directories, etc i suppose) and then was fine.

the reason for switching from the mac version was i had to add an HDPVR to my system (in-laws moved in and required cable tv, well, FIOS tv). 3 days since the switch, and it is working fine - 2.5 TB of previous recordings were all recognized.

now to find another HD200...

And then I realized that I had 1.87TB of data in my recording folder...

Think I'll just move the important ones and start clean! How does recording to NAS work thought? That might save some hassle in the future if I make that change now...

Thanks for the input all.

That would work pretty well. V7 would add all the metadata to the V6 files, then when you copy them over, Sage will recognize them as recordings.

500 cops episodes? Interesting...

Seriously though: this is one of the reasons I don't keep recordings. I don't want to have this problem. Hope it works out for you.

Yea, there's an episode of COPs on ever two or three hours on FIOS, so I'll get them all back soon enough. I just watch cops when I'm working, and I've seen every episode, so I can work on my main system and jump to a client system and keep 'listening' without paying attention (at this point I've seen them all so many times, if I hear it, I can see it in my head!). If you do that with a History channel show, you miss too much, so COPS is perfect to watch when partially distracted.
