Phoenix Background - How to add?

Regarding the home menu background in Phoenix, I added some images to the folder where they are stored but they don't show up in the list of available backgrounds when I go to change it in options.

Are there specific image size / format / color depth rules that I have to adhere to or do I need to edit a .xml somewhere to make them available in options?
