Smile SageTV & HDHomeRun PLUS w/ Transcoding h.264

The HDTC-2US appears to be shipping and it allows you to compress the bitstream with embeded H.264 chipset. That would be a nice addition to My SageTV system as it would thoretically triple the Show Hours capacity of the 5.5 TB of disk on it.

Am I dreaming when I hope that someone could make that work with our SageTV version?

You could probably get it to work with clients as long as you have the correct codecs installed. However it wouldn't work with our extenders and there isn't much we can do besides live trans-coding.

Multiple users on the SiliconDust Forum have reported that it works with SageTV.

"SageTV picked up the new tuners without any issue, and I'm able to watch and record live TV just like the older model."

"Yeah I got mine today and just got it installed and working well with SageTV."

However, what hasn't been confirmed is whether or not the tuner records in H.264 when interfaced with SageTV.

Let us know, there should be a huge difference in the file size, and I guess the file wouldn't be a .mpg file like what you get from the non H.264 encoded files. Maybe a .mp4?

Will Comskip be able to process H.264 encoded files?

Yes, I used to have a HDPVR from Hauppague, I had to donate a few bucks to the comskip guy to download the version that worked with mp4 files. Not sure if that is still a requirment as I got rid of the SAT dish a few years back.

Why wouldn't it work with the extenders? It's just h.264 - the extenders can play that.

The only question is whether the Sage server will recognize it as an available tuner and be able to control it. And, if it does work, will it get the raw MPEG stream, or the converted h.264 stream?

But, after looking at their Plus page, it doesn't look like the Plus supports CableCard? If so, then it's worthless to me in Xfinity space anyway. Guess we need a Prime Plus.

No, the new HDHR PLus is just for OTA. I would imagine if they are selling a lot of the cable card devices they would be working on creating one of those too.

Since I cut that cord a few years back once I realize how much money I was paying for so few actual channels, I only need the OTA device.

You must have missed the above quoted post. Also available: the HDHomeRun Dual is $99 and gets both QAM and OTA just doesn't do H.264.

Bob - The post you quoted acknowledges that the Q has not yet been answered (h.264)...
