Blu-Ray MKV rip shuts off extender
I recently ripped a Blu-Ray (Winter Soldier) into MKV with Handbrake. I set it to downmix the DTS track to "AAC/Dolby Surround" and I also kept the stereo track.
The file is just over 8 GB. It opens and plays fine in VLC on my server PC. However, in VLC it lists the two audio tracks as AAC stereo and DTS audio (I am sure I told it to downmix the DTS, but whatever). I don't know how to check to see which track is playing in VLC but I suspect it's the stereo track (my computer has simple stereo speakers, via the onboard audio jack). Anyway, when I try to play the file on my HD300s, it immediately shuts off the extender (soft power off, blue light goes to red "standby"). It's instant, as though I hit the power button on the remote rather than the "play" button. It's repeatable behavior on both of my HD300s. If I turn the extender back on immediately, it acts as though it is booting up (splash screen), but just before the menu appears, it powers back off again. If I wait another few moments, it starts up just fine. However, on my HD200s, the file plays.... but the timeline is messed up - it appears as though the entire movie has been watched and the marker is at the end. I can't FF or REW, I can only pause or stop completely. I have only let it play about 30 seconds, so I don't know if it would eventually crash, but it appears to play okay, just no moving forward or backward. When I open the file with Handbrake again, no audio track is shown whatsoever. I tried converting it again (MKV to MKV) and as expected, the output file had no audio, because it showed none to put into it. Is this just a corrupted rip? Does it have something to do with the HD300 and HD200 audio handling capabilities? Anyone seen anything like this? Why would it shut off an HD300 but not an HD200? TIA.

I have seen similar behavior from HD300s when attempting playback of MKVs with multiple subtitle tracks; this is usually more than 4-5 tracks.
I have not determined the exact tipping point as far as how many tracks are tolerated, but once I remux down to the single track that I need the playback problems go away. |

I had this problem about this time last year. I had a switch acting up. Removed it, and all was fine.

By "this problem", do you mean an extender shutting off when you tried to play one specific Blu-Ray rip, even though it played everything else (including other Blu-Ray rips) fine? And do you have HD200s that played the same problematic file okay (but with timeline glitches)?

Oops, Yes, it was just my new MKVs, but mine was on a HD200 only. Sorry, forgot about you having the issue with the HD300.
It was a real pain, because I add about 4 new ones, and they all did this, but for some reason, the old ones were not doing it. I re-ripped about 4 times, then moved 1 stinking cable, and everything was fine!!!
