[Solved] Can't connect to server under XP in Virtual Box

I'm running Windws XP in Virtual Box on my Ubuntu 14.04 box. The server on my Windows 7 box is properly configured but I can't connect Placeshifter on the XP VM. I checked all firewall settings and don't see any problems. Any suggestions?

How is the network adapter on the VM configured? It should be configured as bridged so that it is on the same network as the host itself.

Tried bridged, no luck. Funny, client connects but I need the transcoding ability of Placsshifter.

This could be totally unrelated, but I did have a networking issue with my XP VM under ESXi. To see if your issue is related, can you try the following both from the XP VM, as well as from some other computer?

1. Ping hostname
2. Ping IP
3. Tracert hostname
4. Tracert IP

If IP works, but hostname doesn't, you may have a DNS suffix issue on the XP box. To fix, you'd need to add a period (yes, just a single . ) under the DNS suffix settings in Windows for the XP network adapter. You would need to do this for all computers on your network where the XP machine needs to talk to them or vice versa.

I gave up on using Placeshifter in my XP VM. Instead I upgraded my wifi card and now I can run a Sage client in the VM without the need to transcode.

Call me confused, how was the host system previously connected?

I see. While technically 802.11g has the bandwidth necessary to stream HD video if you have several devices using wifi it will significantly impact that performance. That's the main reason I chose to run CAT 5e when we moved into our house. Much less problematic that way.
