Of those, I'd have to vote the Xcode II, being it supports MPEG-4. It an the Wis are the only ones that really bring anything new to the table.

Unfortunately, I think component (I assume that means HD) is a figment of our immagination, for the forseable future.

Wakecrash as for Dolby Digital capture that eazy go to ADS tech and look at the InstantDVD+MP3 which is that I know of the First device with 2-channel AC3 hardware encoding.

What good is AC3 encoding anyway? It's the same as MP2 encoding just a different codec. Surround sound processors deal with either the same

Except there aren't any (true) 480p sources, and 480i component is nearly pointless as it's little if any better than S-Video (in practice, I know it's better in theory).

Lot DVD are in 480P but TV that diff story but in theory component color-coded green, blue, and red should give better over all picture vs S/Video which actually carries two separate signals, one for luminance (Y) and one for chrominance or color (C). The Y signal is the same as in the native component video format. And the C is simply a combination of the B-Y and R-Y color difference signals.

Forget all of those, how about CableCARD and DirecTV tuning? So for now I say go with the cheapest tuner you can get because what is supposed to come out by thte end of the year will supersede analog tuners.

To me, no question it will be the ViXS XcodeII. It's a mpeg4 interal card that supports 4 simultaneous inputs! If I have to 'wait' for CableCard or DTV for an open PC (ie, not an MCE box), then I'll likely die of old age before I see it.

For DTV/Dishnetwork, 169time ALREADY has solutions available for firewire capture. Cable-no thanks.

What do you guys think about the vBox dual tuner PCIe card coming out that I mentioned here:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15767
Looks like it is PCIe x1 and has component in available for one input.

That's what I'm waiting for as well. If this turns out to be a Windows MCE only option, I'll have to seriously consider making the switch.

It's not an encoder, and is subject to the same limitations as current HD cards (with the exception of dual tuners and PCIe). As such, IMO it's not very exciting.

On the non-encoder (ie digital) tuner area, CableCard and DirecTV "cards" are much more exciting IMO.

I'm excited about the new card. I have an empty PCIe slot just waiting for a dual ATSC/NTSC card.

I guess I'm the opposite of stanger89, I don't care about cablecard, directtv, dish, any of that. I'm an OTA guy

I would be, but there's jack squat on OTA, at least that I want to watch. I'll be getting DTV when I move, so being able to record (even SD) DTV without a box, or without an extra encoding step is very appealing to me.

I see. Forgive my lack of knowledge on the subject but I've just recently began researching hdtv stuff since I am finally moving into a place big enough to house a nice HDTV in a few months. Are there any hardware encoder HDTV (OTA capture is all I'm concerned with for now) cards out? If not then wouldn't the one I mentioned before probably be the best bet for me since I'm out of PCI slots but have open PCIe slots?

EDIT: Oh and what about the component input? Isn't that something not currently available? Or is YPrPb not the same as component?

I just refuse to mount an antenna to my roof (or attic) to get an OTA signal. I have had cable TV since I was 8 yrs old (1977) and have no intention of going back to rabbit ears.
