Next generation of Conexant Chips for MPEG2 Capture

OK, I've been watching the Conexant web site for a little while now and they've produced a new chip for MPEG2 capture cards. It's called the CX23418. It's 10 bit where as my Hauppauge 250 is 9 bit. (my card uses the Philips SAA7115 front end with the Conexant CX23416 encoder)
I googled this part number and came up with a press release: -
www.comprousa.com/New/en/press/h900_060104.html
The reason for my excitement is that this chip supports capture from component video!. I've spoken to Compro and asked if the H900 makes these available. I think they were impressed with my e-mail and have told me that it does not, but, they are considering doing so to support HTPC users. So, if you want a high quality 10 bit capture card with component video inputs, email Compro and ask for it!
I also guess that other card manufactures will follow suit shortly so keep your eyes open.

While it is interesting to see the potential for component input I seriously doubt it is goig to give what you are looing for. Maybe a slight increase in quality, but it will still only be 480i and not capable of encoding an HD signal from an HD STB via component.

Yes they told me the same thing to motobarsteward.
jptaz that ture 480 only but that be in 480i/p which min HD STB support via component output.

I've just asked Sage about it. They've not had chance to test one yet. I'm not convinced the the Hauppauge card is at fault. Playing back a recording does seem to be better quality than LiveTv. I will need to buy another card when my Sky+ subscription runs out so I'll get a couple of these cards. These people who keep telling me that component capture will be little better than S-Video need to come and look at my setup. In my home Cinema, I have an Infocus SP5000 and a Sky box. the Sky box only produces RGB and composite so I use a box purchased from www.rgbtosvideo.com. The S-Video on the projector looks OK provided you never switch the projector to RGB. As soon as you do that, you realise just how poor S-Video is! I'm working on the assumption that Component video is comparible to RGB. Put it this way, My 6600GT graphics card has component out. When I connect this to my Samsung 32" LCD, the picture quality on 1080i is pretty well the same as the VGA lead. Now, if I back it off to 576i, SD standard, and compare it to S-Video, it still is many times better than S-Video. I don't care that these new cards don't capture HD component. There are no HD sources in the UK. Sky will start later this year but I'm not really bothered. The content will be limited and although it my be HD, they will be band-width limited. I don't expect it to be much to write home about for a couple of years yet.
