I tried this with slim server and the answer is no. I also did not find any reference to this ablility on the net. Slim server has the ability to use plugins and a large number is already available (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?SlimServerPlugins), but no CD Drive support. Maybe if you start asking for this on the slim server forum (http://forums.slimdevices.com/), someone will pick it up and create just such a plugin.

Thanks for the answer Chris... last question.. does Slim Server take up CPU cycles when a client (ie, SageTV) is not using it?

It is like a Sage Client and Sage Server. Just like Sage server, you don't want to shutdown the slim server.

Koelec,

I have used slim server in the past. Needs some umph to stream, but I believe most of the plug ins you linked to are for the Slim Devices (hardware) and NOT for the actual server software.

Unless you are planning some sort of Device emulation.

EDIT: Re phrase that, they are to be displayed on the Squezze Box or the Slim devices.

@Koelec
This is truely awsome news. From my perspective, the main advantages will be to use the AlienBBC plugin (which transcodes all BBC live realaudio streams and indexes and transcodes all their 'on-demand' programs) and potentially get gapless playback of flac files (does softsqueeze do this, I know it should). But the libary of plugins goes far beyond this (though unfortunately I don't think that it will give you Pandora access, that's on the SqueezeNetwork). Do you have an estimated release date?

@Jimmyb
The plugins are loaded on the slimserver. As I understand it the client (hardware or software) is little more than a dumb terminal and an MP3/FLAC decoder.

I'm running the Slimserver and Softsqueeze (plus Excel, Outlook, IE7, Firefox, Word and all the other stuff normally found on an office PC) on my work PC at the moment. This is a P4@2.8GHz, 1Gb ram and not doing anything else Windows reports total CPU utilisation at 5-6% when playing MP3s stored on a USB HDD.

CPU utilisation for Slim.exe (the slimserver itself) never rises above 00% in the process manager (though memory use is around 65Mb with a library of about 500 CDs).

Using AlienBBC to transcode realaudio raises CPU load to about 10-12% because there is an instance of mplayer and flac.exe running to do the realaudio-> flac transcode.

The slimserver when idle doesn't seem to consume any CPU cycles (though its memory use remains at 65Meg). It fits ideally into a SageTV server - client relationship, running on the PC where the media files are stored. But I would be surprised if it were a problem running alongside SageTV on a client PC (connecting to localhost). Slimserver seems very mature and I've never had any stability issues.

Cheers
Eric

Ok, I've created a special for you (and any others experiencing stutter on some stations).
Please copy the attached webradio.zip file into the JARS folder in your current SageTV installation folder. Rename webradio.jar to webradio.jar.old and rename webradio.zip to webradio.jar.
This new jar will enable you to set the buffer size if you create a file called webradio.properties (be sure the extension is .properties and not .properties.txt) with the following line in it:

buffer=64000

and put this properties file in the same folder where the stationlist.txt resides.
The current buffersize default value (if you don't set the buffer property) is 16000.
You have to restart Sage for the new setting to become effective.

Hope this solves your problem.

- Chris
This is excellent! My stations that were skipping now play completely smooth! Many thanks.

I made some great progress today and I'm really excited about it. Still some work left before releasing it. I think the end of this week would be quite feasible. One thing to know in advance is that the plugin requires version 6.5 of the slim server, which is currently beta.

Volume control buttons?

Hi there,

Any chance someone can add or show me how to add volume control icons to this plug-in? I'm using the old Hauppauge 34 button remotes still, and the volume controls in the plug-in move in and out of the window structure instead of adjusting the volume. I just tried adding one through Studio, and um.. yeah, it didn't work.. (doh!) .... can anyone point me in the right direction? If not, could this be added as a feature to the existing plugin?

Stationlist.txt

I have installed this and added it to My Menu and all is well.....
BUT, for some reason it has not generated the stationlist.txt file the first time I have run it...
Anyone want to share their list??
Or, how can I get one?
JD

If it has not generated it, there must be a problem. Look into the log4j.log file to see if any errors have been reported. I've attached the default stationlist.txt file. Hope this will help.

ps Look out for my new plugin called Simple Slim Player to be released in a couple of days, which supercedes the webradio plugin.

pictures of new simple slim player

Main screen very similar to the old webradio plugin. Notice you can change the list being displayed from favorites to playlists.

Info displayed is automatically refreshed as music changes.

Have access to all features of the slim server in transparent mode, like browing for new stations, creating playlists, settings and so on.

All coding done. Works like a charm. STill need some days to creating stvi import code, so everybody can enjoy it.

Here is a program to accompany web radio... Station List.exe. It is a small program to add stations downloaded from Shoutcast.com

Can anyone help me?

Ditto for me. Triple checked yet keep getting the same issue. I have probably 10 or more plugins installed and many (neilm's) have java files and I don't have any issues with them. Keep hoping an update will come out and the problem will be magically fixed for me otherwise I would have already posted. Figured it was just me and I haven't had time to work through it.

Hey Chris, any idea when we might see the new Web Radio? Needless to say, I can't wait to try it!
