Placeshifter not Connecting

Has anyone noticed that playshifting in the beta verision seems to have a problem connecting. I have never had a problem connecting until i upgraded to the beta software. Now i can connect but sometimes it gives me the unavaiable message. I have to restart the server to reconnect. This is both on the local and wan side. I have beem using playshifter alot more since the new beta but i don't ever recall not being able to connect with the 5.0 version.. Is there some tweaks that i am missing?

thanks

I use it most days and I haven't seen a problem connecting with Placeshifter v6. Is this within your LAN or via internet? If from outside and through a firewall, are you using uPNP?

This with both the lan and the internet. I do not have uPNP turned on I have opened the ports. Running Gigabit in the house and have a fiber connection to the outside world.

thoughts?

Happened to me too (as it did before during earlier beta testing). The password is accepted, but no connection. Delete the user and recreate the user. Solved it for me.

I use a placeshifter client on the local LAN and it too is having trouble. In my case it doesn't see any servers at all and I have to restart the Sage service. The next day it's back to not seeing the server again.

I am having a problem as well. I have never been able to get it working with v6. I think mine has to do with my firewall. It appears to be dropping the 31099 packets. Could possibly be the way they are formatted. I am trying to resolve my issue with Sage and my firewall vendor (Watchguard)

So I'm not the only one with this problem in v6. I'm convinced that something changed in v6 with the way clients connect to the server. For me, whenever I can't connect with placeshifter, I would go into Detailed settings > Advance > Configure Placsshifter Connection, and perform a test connection and usually it fails. Restarting SageTV Service fixes the problem.

Other times I'm able connect, but after entering username and password, it still would not login, it just remain at the login screen. Since it got to the login screen, this means it connected to the server, but fail to authenticate the user. Again, restarting the service fixes the problem.

I have to restart the service everyday which is very inconvenient since it interferes with scheduled recordings. These problems did not exist in previous versions of SageTV.

I feel funny quoting myself but I need to anyway. My problem was indeed my firewall and not Sage. My Firebox x5w has a bug and can only forward up through ports 28000 (not 31099) so I am SOL until they fix this in their next release.

So, it can't forward a lower port to 31099 either?

Do you have an MVP? If not, you can change things to use a port other than 31099. Edit: See the end of the "Firewall Settings" section at the end of chapter 7 in the PDF manual.

Or you could change the port Placeshifter uses to connect.

Edit: Nevermind, Andy beat me to it.

Unfortunately I do have 2 MVP's and after trying to change the port drum roll please.... my MVP's broke just as you mentioned Hopefully they will get a fix for my firewall sometime soon.

Andy, what did you mean by this? Are you meaning is it possible to translate a lower port to the higher port number? If that is what you are refering to then, no, I don't believe so. I just got this firewall so I am not sure what all it can do yet but I do not remember seeing anything to that effect.

I now have this problem too - or at least something similar. Was working fine, but now I just get the login screen at my server, and it never logs in. I created a few import folders yesterday, don't know if it's related...

In SageTV, if you configure the Placeshifter connection in Detailed Setup -> Advanced, one of the configuration options is UPnP. Normally, you can have UPnP forward a different external port number to the internal port 31099.

Some routers let you do it via a manual port forwarding configuration too (using the router's config utility, not the one in SageTV).

But, if your router has problems with higher port numbers, neither one may be possible.

Now I understand. No, this router does not support uPnP and I don't think it allows you to do that internally to the router I do remember seeing that type of option in my old Linksys but not this "business" class router. I think I will just have to wait for the vendor or punt and find something more application friendly. It is an awesome router but does have some limitations.

I have a similar problem, and I can recreate it. I have 3 MVP and I also use placeshifter from my laptops. This is how it happens to me.

If I turn off a MVP (after using it), and turn it on again I will not get past the Sage Media Center is booting up screen. From then on it will not accept any more MVP or Placeshifter connections. All connected and active MVPs or Placeshifter will continue to be conected until I disconect them, and they will also no longer be allowed in. Normal Client will still conect. The only way to fix it is to restart the SageTV service.

From there it will continue working till I shut a MVP off. I have no firewall on my SageTV server, and only bussiness class switch between my server and MVPs.

This is definately a bug, since I had no problems in version 5.

I'm seeing similar problems with the MVP now, boots up first time but after going into standby, won't boot again. This worked for a full week on v6 though, so I have no idea what stops it working!

I found out that setting an IP in this line in sage.properties will kill placeshifter connection: miniserver/forced_server_ip=
I then added my gateway to this line and it worked again: miniserver/gateway=

just checked this on mine and had the gateway IP from my previous LAN. made the change and now PS is trying to stream 1000kbps out of a 256k pipe. ended up having to manually throttle PS for smoother playback.
