5.04 slew of bugs
Sorry but I'm new to use SageTV.. but in testing client server setups I have come across a slew of bugs..
Are these bugs addressed in 6.0? I see a number of "new features" added to the beta but are old issues being addressed? - favorites dont change from "first runs and reruns" to "first runs". It just doesnt. - server crashes a lot requiring a reboot of the server. Before killing SageTV, the server would just spin spin spin - While watching live tv or recording, right clicking gets the menu up and if I click on program guide, 99% it will crash. - network encoding is enabled but the server refuses to show the source as network encoder as true even though it is in the sage.properties. - Scheduled favorites dont show up in schedule recordings. Then sometimes these work and sometimes they dont. |

For the rest, you can enable debug logging to see if that has any info. Tech support could help checking the log. Also check for updated video card drivers, check your video decoder, change the renderer, try changing 3D Acceleration, etc. List your hardware (including tuners & motherboard) and settings & maybe someone else can offer suggestions. A lot of inconsistent behavior and crashes come down to drivers and/or hardware. If you've tried to set up network encoding by editing the properties file, make sure SageTV (and the service) is not running when editing sage.properties. - Andy

The problem is most likely with your individual setup not "bugs" in the software. At least I have none of the problems you listed and most other people don't either.
As for stability my server has been running 2 years with the exception of power outtages. That is the only time it gets rebooted. |

Thanks Andy,
I will enable debug logging and see what is going on before contacting support. couple points to be answered - - yes sagetv is stopped when I modified the properties file and then restarted. how do I configure a network encoder in the UI other than modifying the properties file? SageTV server fresh new windows XP home install with latest updates. newest intel inf file update for the MB Dell 8400 Pentium 4 630 HT processor 3.0GHz ATi HDTVWonder with 9.04 MMC driver set. Java 1.4.0_11 Java 1.6 (which seems to help a lot with smooth streaming btw at both server and client) wifi - yes Im using wifi. netgear wn121t is the usb wifi on the server. it is connected to the 2wire home wifi router for DSL. The 2wire router is hardwired to a gig switch. Yes I suspect this is another problem. SageTV client Dell Inspiron E1705 T2600 Core duo laptop 2.13GHz hardwired to 100baseT nvidia geforce go 7800 java 1.4.0_11 java 1.6 (again more stable when I installed this on the server) another client Dell Inspiron E1505 T7200 core2duo laptop 2GHz hardwired to 100baseT ATi x1400 |

Theres a wifi extender now for viewing on TVs. I suppose wifi support will become more stabilized?

No I uninstalled and reinstalled. That is just a list of java's I used.
It doesnt matter. They all stutter now. R....o...c...k....y...b...a..l..b...o....a....... da..da...da....da....da.....da....da.....da. making me crazy. I'm playing with the buffers right now..that seems to help it recover when it starts. |

What is NumBuffers? What exactly does this do?
On the SageTVClient I adjusted only this value to see if makes a difference. Default is 256 and I set it to 512 decimal. Immediately, the client stops stuttering on restart. If I get it stuttering and I restart the client, most of the time it continues to stutter the way it was before with a constant and consistent pause every second. When I stop the client, bump this value up to 512 and restart the client, its not stuttering. It seems that these buffers are naturally used by viewing clients whether youre using the system with the tuner or the client but it does help me to bump it up on the server as well if I was using a client. As I wrote this message, it stuttered again and quickly regained..seems like the NumBuffers has a direct effect in it recovering. |

Got this from another poster and it works great:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Frey Technologies\Common\DSFilters\MpegDeMux Buffersize & NumBuffers Suggestion is to increase size of NumBuffers but I had best results with increasing both, worth experimenting though. Buffer size of 262144 and NumBuffers 256 works for me. |

Debug log
As far as I see, theres nothing in the debug log indicating any problems during stuttering..

I'm not sure why but the chances of stuttering is reduced when I modify the server and not just client alone. |

wifi network are too slow that why it alway best to do hardwire network and increase size of NumBuffers will not help you in any way on wifi network only very low bitrate will help.

Contrary to what most think, increasing the NumBuffers on the server side did help smooth out the video . Otherwise it is gauranteed to pause and go, pause and go. Last edited by hocky98; 12-15-2006 at 12:43 PM. |

SDTV and the MVP can work fine on wireless. I guess it'd depend on a lot of factors though. I have a stable connection and no neibors, and it works fine with default buffers. Though if you are using the wireless mvp, reportedly it has a very weak wireless "card"... I use the wired version plugged into a bridge.

What I am seeing is and dont quite understand is that video and audio is actually mostly smooth now with the new Netgear Rangemax-N draft series. But the SageTV client menu screws up a lot. Some things dont get display anymore after repeated use like the fast forward button and progress bar.
I highly doubt this is due to dropped packets while video and audio are more bandwidth demanding. I know java can be quite good at demanding applications so what does that leave? bugs. |
