Exclamation Daylight Saving Time change (2007)

Does anyone know what issues we need to be aware of for the new DST change being implemented in the US this year? Are there Java updates, SageTV updates, etc... that we need to be ready for?

I want to be ready so I don't miss anything!

------------------------------
Edit: Both Windows AND java need to be updated. For info about which versions of Java have the update for this years DST changes, see this post. - Opus4

Windows automatically updates for DST via the NTP server, so I don't think we need to worry.

As per sage, It should adhere to the standard windows time. I don' think this DST will be different from the rest.

But I could be wrong

'Fraid so

NTP works with UTC/GMT time and windows applies time zone offsets stored on the PC to set the local time.

For this DST change you need the following hotfix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931836/

This is currently available on Windows Update and is part of February's automatic updates patchset (listed as 'Update for Windows XP (KB931836)'. You can check in control panel/add remove progs to see if it is already installed (make sure 'show updates' is checked)

Note that Java also needs to be updated (see below)

nb. to anyone with a Windows 2000 system. MS is not providing a patch for Win2k for the new DST dates that take effect this year. Only XP and Server 2003. If you want to fix your 2k system, there are a number of options. The most straightforward is to download TZEdit from MS

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927229

and scroll down to TZEdit. You can then fix the dates yourself to correspond with the changes.

There are a number of people who have created .reg files to fix Win2k, but I'm not sure I'm ready to trust random other people to dump stuff into my registry.

Not too worried about the Windows patches as MS has been pretty good at getting at least this patch out. More concerned with Java and how Sage handles time info. I know we have several Windows apps (Exchange, Outlook, etc...) that are affected by the time zone issue EVEN after applying the DST patch for the OS

Google Java DST.

http://java.sun.com/developer/techni...USDST_Faq.html

Item 19: Which versions of the Java SE platform are already USA 2007 DST ready?

Java SE 6 FCS
Java SE 5.0 update 6 and above
Java SE v1.4.2_11

(Edit.)

According to a separate article, the version numbers are slightly different:

1.3.1_18
1.4.2_13
5.0_u9
6

That article also contains a link to a tool to update Java's TZ info without doing a full upgrade.

Theoretically Java applications do not have to be changed.

For troubleshooting, this page will tell you what time + GMT offset Windows thinks it is, check that the offset is correct -- if so and Sage shows the incorrect time then your problem is with Java, otherwise it is with Windows...

Thanks neilm. I took a look at the article you listed and feel a little more comfortable. I am runnin 6 so it looks like it should not be an issue from what I can tell. Thanks for the input everyone.

Windows 2000 etc...

FYI, there is a free utility that patches most windows versions including Windows 2000.

Not an endorsement, just a FYI. But it sure beats doing the manual reg hack or using the timezone editor tool.

FYI

Here's an update from Sage support

>>
Just make sure that you clock settings in systray have the daylight savings tab checked and that's all you need to do.

Thanks,

I just installed the patch from Microsoft (KB931836) for the new DST rules, but everything in the program guide for next Sunday is still off by an hour. I rebooted the PC, and forced an EPG update, but the times are still wrong.

I'm running Windows XP SP1, Sage 5.0.4, and Java 1.5.0_05

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks Greg, I guess I missed that.

Seems sort of silly that you need to upgrade Java for this. Shouldn't Sage just be getting the DST info from Windows?

Anyways, enough of my griping, time to upgrade Java....

Thanks again.

I went to download Java 6, but it looks like the download site at Sun is down (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp)

Theoretically Java applications do not have to be changed.
However, there be many among us who installed the then-preferred (IIRC) 1.4.2_06 version (as I had) - said version would seem to not be "ready" for prime-time.

Easy enough to check version# by going thru Help and System Information.

Cheers,
- Don

just an FYI, I upgraded to Sage 6 over the weekend while applying the microsoft reg modifications necessary to update windows 2000 to new DST. Afterwards, SageTV was displaying the time in GMT time while my system was displaying correct time. I am using Java 1.4.x. I downloaded the tzupdater.jar from sun and after applying the java update and starting sage back up it displayed the right time.

I understand from a posting by SageTV here that I (in the US) do not need to go download patches for Java run-time 1.4. I certainly hope not.

I have installed Microsoft's DST patch for XP.

As long as you're running at least the following versions or above:

Java SE 6 FCS
Java SE 5.0 u6 and above
Java SE v1.4.2_11 and above

Alternative to full java update

I believe you can also just update the time zone data for your existing java version.

http://java.sun.com/javase/tzupdater_README.html

Download timezone update file to your pc
Extract somewhere (in my case c:\downloads).
Open command prompt and cd into extracted directory and run
java -jar tzupdater.jar -u -v

Here was my output:

C:\Downloads>java -jar tzupdater.jar -u -v
java.home: C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04
java.vendor: Sun Microsystems Inc.
java.version: 1.4.2_04
JRE time zone data version: tzdata2003a
Embedded time zone data version: tzdata2007c
Extracting files... done.
Renaming directories... done.
Validating the new time zone data... done.
Time zone data update is complete.
