Naslite-2 and Livetv

Anyone had any luck streaming livetv through sage from a hard drive that is on a nas lite server without stuttering issues?

I have no problems when recording one stream at a time to one disk. When recording 2 or more I get issues. I have recently upgraded my network to gigabit but I haven't tested to see if things are better when recording multiple capture streams, each to its own NASlite Disk.

I do it all the time, no issues with NASLite at all. I can have 3 SD recordings in progress as well as streaming to an MVP with no stutters.

So what should I check if I have issues.. I have 1gb nic cards on both the sage server and the nas box. The nas box only has 128mb of ram in it though.. could that be the issue because I was under the impression that memory had no effect on the nas boxes.... I believe I only have issues with livetv .. have not looked at multiple recordings yet.. My CPU is an Athlon 3200+

I'd drop some more memory in there if I were you. Remember that a NAS box with use disk cacheing in memory, more memory = more disk cache. I'm assuming it's a tiny linux distro? If so more ram will certainly help...

+1. More RAM (say 256-512) is best.
I have 512Mb in my NASLitev2 box.

Increased memory to 512k .. still stuttering during livetv ... I dont think more than 512 mem is helpful with naslite.... I even put in a different gb lan card to no avail.. any ideas?

I am running naslite+ on PII-300 with 32MB of RAM. The naslitebox has GigE but Sage is 100Mbps. I can record 2 SD shows live, and process the shows with ShowAnalyzer without stuttering.

I found somewhat of a solution to my issue: when I set the speed of my nic card on my sage server in its settings to 100mbs/Full Duplex autonegotiate, Livetv plays fine even though the speed of my gigabit nic is reduced. The 1000mbs autonegotiate setting causes the stuttering for livetv. Does anyone know why this would happen if I have gig nic cards on the nas and sage servers as well as a gigabit router? Doesnt make sense to me...

If you are dropping a lot of packets when useing the Gbit, this would cause a LOT of problems. At a guess, it would be wiring problems, as the 100Mbit doesn't seem to be dropping packets.

I know there is some network software out there that will test these kind of things, but I don't know where any more.

is your friend and its free.

Also is TCP scaling turned on,? this will cause a lot of problems on some networks.

Where is the TCP scaling setting?

I dont think its wiring because I took a brand new crossover cable and connected the two servers together and the same issue occurred (skipping with livetv)

On another note, I dont know what to do or check for with ethereal ... not a networking guy

Can you explicitly set all cards / ports to Gig?

Can you essentially turn off the autonegotiate and explicitly set all cards and routers in the chain to gig speed?

Just a thought. As a side note: At work, the network guys for our application (non HTPC related) have generally said to not use autonegotiate, and always explicitly set speeds to match throughout the chain.

is there a questionable gigabit-e switch involved here?

That was always a popular solution to avoid duplex mismatches at 10M or 100M speeds, but for gigabit speeds, autonegotiate is part of the basic spec and can't generally be disabled.

OK... I replaced my nic card and disabled the nic on the mb. I dont think its the switch because I had the same issues with a crossover cable between the sage server and the nas box. It seems to be running a lot smoother now but I think there are issues when show analyzer is working runs against drives on the nas box. Does anyone else run into this?

the disks can only do so many seeks (head movements) per second. Maybe too much to ask, running all that at once.

BBCritical,

you mean a network card in the NASLite box issue?
That's what I got from reading that thread.
