2 servers 1 mvp

Basically i have 2 sage servers and 1 mvp ( and a few client's but anyway ) I want the MVP to always to connect to a certain server, but sometimes it connects to the wrong one, is there a way to force it to connect to the specific server?

I know that in earlier clients you could 'hard code' the ip..sort of....in one of the settings menu. Maybe you can edit the clients/extenders properties file to make it connect to a certain IP all the time (assuming you set the other IP in question to static)....don't have much experience with the MVP- so just throwing out some ideas that you may find useful.....Good luck!!

Yea, i know that setting is on clients... but not on MVP's (at least not mine). My understanding is that it will actually pull the config after it connects to the bootp server, the problem is that its connecting to the wrong server, so it wont pull the config anway

Is there a properties file for the clients (On the server that you want to connect to - giving it preference)? I assume there is one and you should be able to edit it to specify the IP.....it is how the MVP clients remember remote and other UI settings etc.....but I guess you should wait for someone more experienced with that sort of stuff to respond...

but if i set the "server to connect to" in the preference file and it connects to the wrong server, it will never pull that file i've edited, as its config, but the config file thats on the other server...

hmmm- I see your point....

It would be possible to turn off extenders on the second server...unless you are using placeshifter via that server too....

yea, i use placeshifter for the other server, and plan to get another mvp for the other server also... the only thing that comes to mind is setting a rule on the windows firewall to block all traffic from my mvp

I was thinking of that- but can you lock out a specific IP on windows firewall?...you can probably use some freeware firewall to do the same...or if you have two different router/switch settings...u can place the MVP ip in the blocked list of the second one....

Please take anything I say with a pinch of salt, but with my mvp, if I power it off completely, and then back on again, I can go into its own menu system and it gives me the chance to select which IP address to select as the preferred server.

I've only got one server on my system so I don't know how reliable it would be in practise.

Mine always boots up with a blue screen showing " Locating/ Searching for DHCP servers".... do you have the ethernet cable unplugged or something?

Will check this tonight .

its the menu system on the firmware of the mvp. It gives you 3 seconds to press the OK button to break into the network setup.

Its the ver 2.05 firmware, not sure if it works like that on the ver 1 firmware of the other one I have.

no, not the wireless. You can't upgrade the firmware so you're stuck on the firmware that it comes with.

I just tried it on my ver 1 one, and by default it doesn't give you the options. It just boots straight into Sage.

I think what I did was download the latest hauppauge software, installed it and started the hauppauge services while sage was shut down, get it to boot from the hauppauge s/w, and then it gives you network options when you boot it. After that, disable the hauppauge services so that it wont boot from it.

It was a few months ago that I tried it....... and the grey matter is fading fast

EDIT: I got it working like this after an exchange of emails with hauppauge support

lol, yea i was going to try that when i got back to the house... dont see a "firmware update" figured just letting it connect back to the happague software would update it.

I encountered this problem last week while using a trial version of Sage on another computer. My quick and dirty solution was to disconnect the ethernet cable from the second system until the MVP booted up. Not pretty but worked, might upset users of the second server if any.

How about buying a second network card for the server you want to run the MVP from and directly connecting the MVP to it? My networking skills are a bit rusty (I'm a database developer), but I think that it would work. You may run into issues with DHCP, however.

the exact reply from hauppauge was

The wired devices and the Wireless devices have different firmware. If you would to download the latest software you should get the option on which server to connect to.

as you can see it doesn't give you much confidence.

If it doesn't work for you, I'd probably look at the firewall route.

What I do is "Disable" the "Media Extender and Placeshifter Server" on the one that I don't want to use the MVP on then it will connect to the other one. But Locally I can still specify the IP address in Placeshifter to connect to the disabled one. I would expect that you would NOT be able to connect to that server from the internet however. And I have only tried this with 6.0.19 and earlier.
