IDE --> SATA adapter
Hi,
Anyone out there ever tried an IDE to SATA adapter? I have a 500gb IDE drive that I would like to use on my SATA/Raid controller as part of a raid 1 array. TIA Jesse

I have been using the one that came with my Abit motherboard for the past few years, and never had a problem with it. I've actually considered getting a few more, since I have a bunch of SATA ports doing nothing (and too many IDE drives), but haven't found another brand that looks like it would be as solid as the Abit one.

I used one of these when upgrading my Father-in-law's PC so that he could continue to use his current IDE hard drive (which wasn't really that old and had plenty of capacity for him). Seemed to work just fine.

I am also using the adapter that came with the Abit motherboard that I just replaced. The new motherboard did not have enough IDE ports and I didn't want to have to buy a new drive. Works great.

Funny you mention this, as I just tried to put one in yesterday, but the drive is not being recognized. I bought it on ebay from HK. May be cheap, but there is not much to these. The master on my secondary IDE seems to not work (although slave does). So trying to use IDE drive on SATA. Mobo is Intel 865PERLX.
Folks who have gotten these to work, perhaps you can help me out (required settings, jumpers, etc). I plug adapter into the back of HDD, plug in SATA cable from mobo to adapter, and SATA power to adapter. then plug in power to HDD. I tried no jumper and master on HDD (some forums say master is needed). BIOS says SATA controller is enabled. When I start it up, it asks if i want to boot from network drive [F12], and takes some time to boot. Going into BIOS shows the drive is not detected. Any ideas? Thanks |

sabre on mine I just left the jumper in the cable select position. |

think there's a significant speed penalty in using this adapter?

Thanks Oats. So no other tinkering needed?
edit-tried again on CS and all other configurations, but no luck. DO not think this will fly for me. Last edited by sabre; 03-03-2007 at 11:10 AM. |

Hi,

My only concern is that my raid card may not like it. As I am starting with a simple raid 1 array I think I am going to give it a go. It would really be nice to make use of the 500gb ide drive I already own. Jesse

Maybe it's smarter to just go RAID 1 and if you outgrow it, create a 2nd RAID 1. But the overhead is pretty high with this approach. |

thanks. Sounds like RAID 5 done right is too expensive for me.
