Moving Sage to New PC.. is this right?

I read the FAQ.. and it didn't really clearly list what needs to be done.. so if anybody could help me out.. that would be Great!!!

My old system had recording directories on the C:, D:, and F: drives..
My NEW system will have it only on the D: drive...

IF I understand the directions... this is what I THINK I need to do???!!!!

1) Stop SageTV on the 'Original' PC.
2) Install SageTV on the 'New' PC and create and configure a new Video location on my new data drive (D)
3) Ensure that the 'New' PC has drives C:, D:, and F: by creating a mapped drive F:
4) Once I am sure that I have drive letters (do the paths need to exist too?), I can copy ALL the content from the 'Original' drive into the new Video folder on my new Drive D:
5) Copy original Wiz.bin to new PC
6) Once all the shows have been moved over to the new drive, then I can start SageTV up and it will recognize the old shows in the new location...
7?) Delete the refernces to the old video folders in SageTV so that it now contains only the correct folder* (See question below)

Question..
In my NEW installation, do I need to create video folders for each of the 'orginal' installations folders? In other words, would I need a C:\Video, D:\Video and E:\Video folder to be created, or would I not need to worry about that at all as long as I had a C, D, and F drive in existance? Would I then only have the 'NEW" Video folder in that setup?

Thanks Everybody!

you might want to copy the properties file as well if you are using the same hardware (Tuners, blasters and STB's).

I only have one 750GB recording drive so I'm not sure but you could probably create one recording directory and place all your recorings in it as long as Sage isn't running until after you move them. I could be wrong though. You could try it and if it doesn't work then create the recoring directoies to match the old PC and place them in it and copy over the wiz.bin again.
Can't hurt to try it.

You shouldn't have to recreate all the paths; seeing the drive letters w/o the recordings should allow SageTV to recognize those recordings in the new recording dir.

Save a copy of wiz.bin before using it. If you are using a version prior to v6.1, I would set the wizard/disable_maintenance=true property until things are working the way you want them to.

I don't think I would reuse the properties file from the old system. If the install dir or other dirs have changed, you'll need to manually edit those paths in the properties file. If something doesn't work, you won't know if it was an old setting & will need to start fresh anyway. I think it is better to start with a fresh properties file on a new system & then perhaps copy some customizations settings from the old one if you want to.

???? We NEED a software wizard program or very clearly written cookbook instructions, well distributed, on this frequent topic. What we have is obscurely located and obtuse as all heck.

As a new poster I recently asked for something like that and was slapped down with the RTFM-type response "go read the FAQs". I would agree that much seems obtuse to those who need it the most (new posters) but I don't want to get slapped down again. I don't know the secret handshake yet.

BTW: what exactly does "wizard/disable_maintenance=true" do? I could make assumptions but it would be nice to get the real/specific info.

TIA,

- Don

Where were you slapped down? The first few posts in your thread weren't much help -- they seemed to be wondering if yours was a troll post, but the posts after those were trying to help you. Suggesting that you check the FAQs doesn't seem like a slap.

Among other things, that setting prevents the core from clearing out the old unneeded database entries for EPG data. After a couple days, airing info that isn't needed is dumped in order to prevent wiz.bin from growing larger faster w/all the old EPG info. Info for shows marked Watched, Don't Like, Favs, existing recordings, and probably a few other things are kept in the database. In v6.1, data for shows that have been recorded is also kept, even if the show has no other markers.

Prior to v6.1, you wanted to set this property so that airing info wasn't dumped for older shows when SageTV saw that the files were no longer around. If this happened & you really did have the files available, SageTV had no airing info to re-associate with the recordings when you put them back into some recording dir.

Talking

that setting seems to have worked a treat for me. I had to fire sage back up for upcoming recordings before I had all the shows copied back to my replacement drive. All I had to do was re-set the manual recording status of those manually recorded. nerve-racking during the process of reworking my system the past few days, but i think I have sage happy now.

I ran into an issue regarding the transfer of Wiz.bin to a new PC / new SageTV install. http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23797

I had to go through the Tuner setup twice. So you may want to copy over Wiz.bin first, and then do the tuner setup.

I record onto the 750GB drive in Max Mpeg-2 quality but I edit out commercails and encode everything that I want to keep and place them onto either a 4*500GB raid-5 array or onto another 750GB hard drive that I also back up onto LTO 100/200GB tapes. And since everything encodes to about 175MB/hr I don't think I'll run out of space for another year or so.

But NO finger crossing is done here........except for recording drive

For those without 6.1, what is/where can we always find the correct SIMPLE procedure to change PCs or drives without a database screwup?
