Forgot that Nero Video Decoder can play the sample with the Haali splitter, but the CPU usage is very high and I get some VMR tearing. I didn't try to get it to work in Sage yet though, only in graphedit.

This is getting somewhat closer, and may be reaching a point where Sage support could be involved. I will try to mess around with these other values when I am permitted a maintenance window and shall report back. Thanks, DQ

The reason I mentioned the Nero decoder is that it's a single filter for handling multiple codecs including mpeg2 and H.264. If you have to modify the "video_decoder_filter" setting to get live TV to work, maybe the Nero decoder with Haali could be a solution. However, I would hope that the sage directshow player can use merits to find a decoder that works correctly by leaving that setting blank, or I think I saw it set to "Default" (not sure). |

It appears from this thread that the Dish Network h.264 files are successfully decoded using PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra. I have PowerDVD 7 Deluxe, which contains an h.264 decoder, and have been unsuccessful at rendering R5000-HD-recorded files from UniversalHD and CinemaxHD on Dish Network using this decoder (either inside or outside of SageTV).
So I wonder: Apart from the extra DRM, are the decoders different between the Ultra and Deluxe versions? (I have no current interest in viewing BD or HDDVD discs, just R5000 recordings.) Can one of you who has PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra and the R5000 confirm that it properly displays R5000 recordings from either UniversalHD or CinemaxHD, not necesarilly from within SageTV? If so, does NVidia hardware acceleration function properly for these input streams? Were any special steps required for viewing the h.264 streams in a directshow player, such as MPC, using PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra? I am wondering if I simply purchased the wrong version of PowerDVD or if there is some non-obvious way to get the Deluxe version to properly display the videos. |

SageTV support and developers are aware of this issue. I spent a couple of weeks going back and forth with them via a support ticket. Since they cannot get their hands on the CoreAVC decoder right now, not sure where this leaves things. I know there is the Elecard Plug-in, but I believe that only works with their player. |

I was "thinking" about pulling the trigger on PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra to get my sage and H.264 working happily together. Funny that Cyberlink offers free trial downloads for all their products put................ PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra |

http://www.cyberlink.com/cinema/ati/.../enu/index.jsp Regardless, that cyberlink decoder I downloaded could not play the recent R5000 recordings whereas the CoreAVC decoder could play them. I tested both decoders used Media Player, Media Player Classic, and Graphedit |

The best luck I had was Elecard's mpeg splitter from the "Elecard_AVC_Decoder_Pack_Demo.zip" I mentioned earlier with Cyberlink's H.264 decoder. I could get the Haali splitter to work with Nero's Video Decoder, but CPU usage was very high. Haali with CoreAVC would "play", but the picture was all "scrambled." |

After much aggravation, I finally got my old Fusion I working with SageTV. In case anyone cares, I had to use older drivers. The ones included with the FusionHDTV software package 3.11 worked for me.
Anyway, I was trying to figure out if I could get an alternate demux to work with live Mpeg-2 HDTV. The answer is NO. I tried several different demux filters including Haali, Cyberlink, the windows mpeg-2 demux, Gabest Open Source Mpeg Splitter, and elecard. I didn't try the more recent version of the elecard demux, only the one I had working with DualQuad's H.264 sample. |

Had some time to play around a little with trying to play an H.264 r5000hd capture today.
I switched: videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CyberLink H.264/AVC Decoder (HD264) For this: videoframe/h264_video_decoder_filter=CoreAVC Video Decoder And tried to play a previously recoded file. The file plays great in MPC or when rendered with GraphEdit. When I try to play in Sage. It plays for about 3 seconds video & audio then freezes. With the Cyberlink H.264 decoder the video does not play at all, but the sound plays fine and there is no freeze. Here is the relevant part of the log: Code:

It appears that the trial decoder used in your tests was a version that was released on 12/28/2005. The release date of the latest build of PowerDVD 7.3 Ultra is 5/28/2007. It is likely that Cyberlink incorporated additional refinement and features to the latest version that were not present in the 2005 version. Based on redondo_se's and DualQuad's posts, it may well be the case that the features needed to play Dish Network's h.264 encoded streams have been added. I would just like to be 100% sure before I consider spending any more money, being that I already spent $80 on a PowerDVD 7 Deluxe, which apparently does not work. |

So I tried the more recent version of the elecard demux in Sage and it works with live OTA HD Mpeg-2 from my fusion card, but won't work with DualQuad's sample and any of the several H.264 decoders I tried (I forgot to try CoreAVC). That version of the Demux works great in graphedit with Cyberlink's H.264 decoder, even with Sage's file source filter. There's something about the graph being used in Sage that's screwing things up. I'm sure they have an extra filter or two in the graph that dump the stream to disk, but I haven't tried to figure out which one's they're using and tried to use them in graphedit. |

I suspect that SageTV is attempting to use its built-in version of mplayer (which uses ffmpeg) instead of coreavc. These error messages are definitely from ffmpeg, which does not yet implement decoding of PAFF interlaced material. Libavcodec, which was mentioned in the error message from your previous post, is also part of ffmpeg.

So the question is: Does this error in thumbnail creation somehow cause SageTV to halt all attempts to render the video, even using CoreAVC? |

Thought I'd post here to bump this up.
For some reason, installing Vista Home fixes playing of h.264 streams with SageTV. I have no clue why, but it does for me. All the h.264 channels (nfl-hd, espn2 etc) play smoothly. The only glitch, which happens fairly regularly on certain channels, is with the r5000-hd not recognizing certain h.264 streams properly. It will report the stream as mpeg-2 0 x 0 @ null and Sage will give a playback error. Re-trying a time or two will usually fix things. The downside, for me, was the immense hassle of installing a new operating system (especially for a Mac guy), the inevitable driver glitches and the Vista oddities. I can no longer have simultaneous SPDIF and analog audio out, and the Nvidia Vista drivers won't do proper scaling for the video or allow overscan correction. I may go back to XP and live with the lack of smooth h.264 playback in sage until the Vista drivers mature a bit. |
