Testing firewire output with SA 8300HD ..
Good evening,
Late last week, I tried attaching my Comcast SA 8300HD to a laptop using the firewire port. When doing this, Windows did absolutely nothing - meaning it did not state that a device was attached, nor did it ask to install any drivers or display an unknown device. Does this mean that the firewire ports are shut off on this box? If that is the case, what is the 'law' on cable companies providing USA customers with enabled devices? Thanks in advance! -Jay

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Does it sound like the port is deactivated? If a port is deactivated, would my PC not be able to see it at all?

I unsuccessfully tried to hook up the same box via firewire.
When i hooked it up windows did indeed find the box and the drivers installed right away. But unfortunately for me, Charter had ALL the channels locked. "Why did they have an open Firewire port if all the stations were going to be locked?" Because they suck... But it souns like either a driver setup problem or the ports are indeed disabled. Look at this to check if your setup procedure is accurate.

Good to know. So, one last question for anyone out there - what is the FCC's vision or reasoning for requiring cable companies to provide an enabled firewire port? Was their intention to provide a true digital connection to a TV?
