Forum Search Timing

Would it be possible to change the time restrictions on searches to something lower? I find myself having to wait around a lot if I am trying to do a specific search rather than a broad one that is going to return way too many topics.

Restrict it to registered members only if you think it will present a bandwidth problem. Surely I'm not the only one that it aggravates.

It's especially annoying if you have a typo in your search terms, get back nothing, and then have to twiddle your thumbs for ten or fifteen seconds before you can try again.

I say just remove the timer altogether and see how bad it gets.

The min time between searches is set forum-wide, not per usergroup, and it is set as low as we want to go at the moment to help control the server's load and prevent search flooding. The time limit was increased a long time ago because of server issues it was causing. BTW: It used to be 45 seconds, so 20 is an improvement.

Is there any way to set it so that if there were zero results returned by the previous search that the timer doesn't hit?

Maybe I'm just impatient, but 20 seconds seems like forever when you are counting the seconds and needing an answer to something.

To save you some time coming up with alternatives: this came up at least once before somewhere & there were lots of suggestions for alternate ways to limit the searches. But it all boils down to this: the only option is X number of seconds between searches.

This was last changed long ago, so I'll see what the current server load is. If it looks like it might be able to handle a lower limit, we may try it. But, don't be surprised if it remains at 20.

Np, thanks for looking into it. If it can't change, it can't change. I just thought that I can't be the only one pulling my hair out sometimes.

Update: we're trying a 15 second limit between searches for now.

Hopefully it's not on the main developmental server for Sage

That would be kind of ironic, wouldn't it? The more we clamor for the next beta release, the slower their development system runs, and the longer it takes....

No, the dev team is safe - it is on the test machine that gets rebooted all the time.
