avi codec question

what's the best catch all avi decoder to use with sage.. especially for variable bit rate xvid/divx... sage seems to either not be able to play video or the timeline is multiplied by a factor of 4. The file plays beautifully under WMP.

I use XVID from here, and also use the AVI splitter from here, which is much more reliable with skipping and large files than the MS default one.

I don't think you can beat FFDShow for decoding and post processing of just about anything (otrher than MPEG2, which should be left to a dedicated decoder like the Purevideo decoders).

As far as splitters go, Ive found Haali splitter to be by far the most robust.

FFdshow is definantly the best free decoder out there. It does nearly every audio and video codec there is.

Right now, Im setup for everything but MPEG-2 to be split by Haali. I think sage's included splitter still does that.

Video decoding: Purevideo for Mpeg-2, the latest PowerDVD for x264 (that plus Forceware 165.01 and my 8500GT are doing hardware decoding in XP!), and ffdshow for XVID/DIVX and anything else I think.

Audio decoding: AC3 filter for AC3 and DTS; ffdshow for AAC, MP3, and anything exotic.
