DVD playback without the disc
This is ridiculous.. The only folks that silly stuff like this hurts are the honest people that just want a convenient way to watch there movies..

It's not only ridiculous. It's outrageous! They obviously want to not only put Kaleidoscope out of business, but all other companies whose solutions offer DVD playback from Hard disk....
I guess they believe that Media centers are too forward and the people should instead revert to buying more Toshiba and Pioneer DVD and HD-DVD players to play movies instead..... I am sure if this becomes law in the US, they will bring out more models supporting 100s of DVDs just like the old days.... The presence of Intel in the group proposing me surprises me somewhat. The companies proposing this are going on my blacklist....

This can't be a surprise, Kaleidescape found a loophole in the License, DVD CCA has plugged it. Yes it sucks, but it doesn't change anything for media center (PC) users. Not sure what Kaleidescape will do.
As far as HD DVD and Blu-ray go, this has nothing to do with them, those are governed by AACS LA, not DVD CCA. |

You are right Stanger89.
The way I read it initially is that they were expecting that sware like PowerDVD and SageTV should not have functionality to play DVD format video copied from physical DVDs to Hard Disk folders. Obviously, they are referring to Kaleidoscope since that software has built-in functionality to backup the DVDs to the Hard Drive without removing CSS. In any case for us living in Europe it's a more remote possibility that such stuff would get passed.......
