Got the Media Extender, Now what?
Ok, so I got 2 media extenders. I've got the first one on the wireless network. I've enabled the SageTV Server, Media and Placeshifter Server. When I try to setup the server on the MediaMVP, It can't find any servers. Any idea what could be the problem? There's no firewall on the server box that I'm aware of. Just strange.....

Ok, Plugged in the 2nd one and still the same problem..... The signal isn't great, but I know it's not that.....

Ok, so just for the sake of trouble shooting, I went so far as to dig out the 25 foot network cable, and ran one on wired, still not seeing the server.....

Ok, so it was a firewall problem with Windows Firewall. For those interested in the future (and this should be included in the docs IMHO), the firewall ports to open are at:

Do you have an active DHCP server on your network? Also, make absolutely sure the windows firewall is disabled on your server. It is on by default.
Aloha, Mike Edit: Dang. I typed too slow....

Ok, so I pluged the ethernet in, works good, unplug, reboot on wireless, and it like loads, then hangs on a black screen.....

well, it works fine if I bypass the auto-connect, reselect the "prefered server" and then it works fine. Kinda strange. Kinda a pita if the power goes out. Be nice if it just worked out of the box.....

As an update to this problem, I let one run all day, and it did eventually connect. I know it seems to take longer loading the SageMC 16x9 skin than it does loading the default one..... Not sure if this is the issue or something else. Thinking of checking out other skins anyways.....

I would try troubleshooting with the wireless right next to the transmitter in order to avoid any problems inherent in the distance...(read: packet loss or corruption)

It's getting a very strong signal, 4 to 5 bars.

Also, check your version of Java on your server (I believe the latest version is v1.6?) When I upgraded to the latest Java version, by MVP response time improved probably 3-fold. But I don't use a wireless MVP.
When your wMVP is connected, can you ping it from your server?

I'll check java. I can also check the ping later, I don't see why I couldn't ping it, it's pulling a IP address no problem.

Pinging it does nothing, do the wired ones let you ping em?

Ok, pinging fine now. I went so far as to plug in my older Linksys WirelessB instead of the Netgear Wireless G and still no luck. I can't even get them to download the image at this point. 2-5ms ping time.
As to Java. I downloaded 6.1 to find out it's already installed. Java 2 Runtime Enviroment is listed as 1.4.2_13 and Java Runtime Enviroment 6 update 1. So it shouldn't be there either..... -Todd

Ok, this is just absolutely retarded. Even running the MediaMVP software, it takes almost a minute to load. I can't even get it to connect to SageTV anymore. Thinking the 300+ on these was kind of a waste. It's getting really annoying, that's for sure.....

This may not be what you want to hear, but there have been very few success stories with wireless on the MVP (They work like a charm when wired). Just do a quick seach of the forums and you will find many threads discussing very similar issues. It seems that the best way to achieve success is by using a wireless bridge. I just got mine and will hopefully get it set up before too long. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I hate to see someone going through such a frustrating ordeal. I've been there enough times myself.
Aloha, Mike

What I don't understand is how can you expect to sell something that doesn't work. It's not like I bought this on ebay and said hey, let's get this working on Sage. I bought this through the SAGETV store! If nothing else, a warning saying "hey, this works for some people but not other's" would have been nice. I don't see why I should have to buy a wireless bridge (hell, I don't have the money anyways) when the device is wireless. It seems to be a SageTV issue, and not a mvp issue since the mvp software works fine. I was thinking ok, maybe it's a wireless issue, so I went back to my Linksys. Then I thought maybe it's the WEP, so I went to unencrypted. I'm just so frustrated right now, I'm debating going back to BTV. All I wanted was an easy way for my kids to watch movies without coming to me to pick out a movie and put it in, wait for the previews to finish, etc. Very sad that I have to either run ethernet cable or get a wireless bridge, for something SageTV advertises as "Easy to setup, connect your TV, home network and go" and "Easy to setup, just connect your SageTV Media Extender to your TV, setup your wMediaExtenderwired or wireless network connection and you are ready to go."

Oh yeah, so if I want to run it wired, I now need a hub, since my router connections are full, hence the whole purpose of going wireless. I think these will be going back to SageTV. Can't really do anything with em on wireless and I don't want to spend a small fortune either getting the bridge or getting a hub and running cable.....
