The MCE remote can be used to control SageTV, but SageTV does not use the MCE blaster by itself. Check a couple of the sticky posts at the top of this forum for info about using its IR blaster.

I used to use MCE ir blasters to control my stb's via HIP (freeware option). It took a bit to setup and get running, but it ran smoothly for me without many issues (other than the occasional missed recording due to a bad IR signal from the blaster). HIP also allows you to control other programs as well if you take the time to setup the commands.

i recently switched from using ir blasters to using firewire to control my stb's. If your stb has a firewire port that is definately the way to go. Since switching to firewire i havent missed any recordings and i have noticed the channels change a bit faster as well. There is a nice guide on how to configure the stb's for firewire channel changing over in the downloads section.
