Anyone else getting more systen hangs / crashes?
Is it just my poor ageing PVR or are other people experiencing more stability problems with this beta? I have had my system hang twice since installing it and normally it is rock solid. It has been going for 5 years though... maybe some of the hardware is finally giving up.

Oh I am getting real system crashes - you know, screen is showing, but the mouse and keyboard are ignored. I wouldn't mind so much if they actually blue screened because it would reboot!
Maybe it is just the Cambridge electricity supply - it has a history of being terrible and the weather has been bad so I would not be surprised if it had browned out last night. Maybe I will get a UPS... |

Turns out crashes are happening with the last beta as well. Now reverting back to an old version of Java.
Apparently there are some DVB bug fixes coming so hopefully they will help. |

Yes, I had more crashes with the RC. Big crashes featuring the blue screen of death on a system that's usually quite stable. One of my drives is starting to die so I thought that might be causing the crashes. But I had to revert the system back to the last non-beta release for this and other issues to keep the WAF high. The system has been running with the reverted S/W and the shaky drive for a week now and no crashes. So, something must be up with that RC.

The result of my experiments is don't use the latest beta with the latest java release. I have gone back to Java 5 and haven't had a problem since.

Too early to tell for sure, but I did a clean 6.2.6 RC 1 install yesterday AM and haven't had a problem. Pics, music, videos (after changing some WMP settings for .wmv) and TV (including HDHR BDA drivers) are woring well. Java is 1.6u2. Imports are Dynamic Menus, Info Pop Up, Mini Guide, Close File, and IMDB.

Well, I don't have any of those imports. I only have XMLTV as an add-on. Maybe something to do with DBA / DVB-T I guess, but I don't think I will be updating to Java 6 again (I was using 1.6u2 and it did work OK for about 4 or 5 days before it started flaking out, so be warned).

I have seen this too. I leave my system on 24-7, and sometimes I have that the sage screen saver logo is gone only to see a black screen. I can move the mouse across the screen, but Sage it self is locked up. I have always used Java that installs with Sage, but since updating to the latest Java, it does not seem to happen as often. I have a fairly new system and this did not start until using the latest betas.

I hadn't looked at what java I was using, I will give that a look. I reverted back to 6.2.4 and have been stable again. I will try to revert java and try the RC again. Mike |

I started having some stability issues and assumed it was due to running the 6.2.x betas. Turns out the instability was caused by my adding some very large pictures into my photo gallery and then using them as a screensaver on my MVPs.
Sage loads the images into (java heap) memory before displaying them so if the images are too big the heap overflows and it gets ugly. Sage support debugged this after exchanging numerous emails and log files. They did a great job as far as I am concerned. I removed the large photos and I've been rock solid ever since running the 6.2.x betas. Tom

I had a crash this morning. I suspect this is because I have just started to try the nVidia PureVideo decoder since my screen did something odd that I have never seen before. I will continue with PureVideo for a bit, but if I get any more of these I will go back to the SageTV MPEG2 decoder or maybe try another. The nVidia decoder certainly looks good and plays smooth, so it would be a shame to abandon it.
Of course, it could be that I need to update my display drivers - I haven't done in about a year! |
