We get a lot of inquiries about the new DirecTV MPEG-4 receivers. After complete testing with the model H20 receiver it has been determined that a capture modification will NOT be possible. This includes both MEPG-2 and H.264 channels. Note: the model H10 is similar in design and function and cannot be modified either.
We still don't believe that the MPEG-2 channels will be disappearing anytime soon. After all its been close to 2 years since the initial reports of the MPEG-4 change-overs have been announced and a lot of us have only just started receiving H.264 locals. At some point DirecTV will get around to announcing some new national HD content and it will most likely be broadcast in MPEG-4 format. However, switching the existing core MPEG-2 HD line-up over to MPEG-4 cannot happen until a huge number of installed MPEG-2 receivers are swapped out. This will most likely will take a number of years and those of you using a R5000-HD modified DirecTV unit will continue to enjoy their recording capabilities.
In the mean time for those of you are interested in getting the most HD content from satellite, our Dish Network solutions provide full capture capability (all MEPG-2 and MPEG-4 channels). Furthermore, Dish Network holds a significant lead in the number and quality of HD offerings.
