Video issue

I have a 27" CRT HDTV (Panasonic), with a a native resolution of 1080i.When I plug in my HTPC via a DVI to HDMI cable using the 1920x1080 resolution on my Nvidia 6150 video card the displayed image has black bars on the top and bottom. If I press the aspect ratio button the remote nothing happens. However if the computer is not plugged in the aspect ratio button does change between 16:9 and 4:3 on all video sources on the TV. Is there a way to force full screen with the HTPC plugged in? Or will changing my video card make a difference? THANX!

Presuming your TVs screen is 4:3, here is what seems to be happening. You're sending your TV a 16:9 resolution from your PC and it is being displayed on a 4:3 screen, hence the black bars. Therefore, you will have to change to a 4:3 (1440x1080) resolution from your PC to make the black bars go away. I expect your remote only changes the resolutions coming from the TV PCB instead of both the TVs PCB and your PC.

THANX for your reply. Yes I do have a 4:3 TV. However I don't see 1440x1080 as a resolution I can pick. Any suggestions? THANX!

You can try 1280x960, it's 4:3. Make sure you have the latest nVidia drivers for your graphics also. Right click on the nVidia icon in your task bar and resolution should be one of the selections youcan pick. Look for any of the 4:3 resolutions mentioned.

Thanx for your help. I have tried several differernt 4:3 resolutions and they all have the black bars. After reading the TV manual again. It says the HDMI port is restricted to 16:9 aspect ratio.

If you switch to COMPONENT you should be able to call your own resolution. The problem you're having with the DVI/HDMI is the internal ROM on the TV is presetting the resolution and aspect.

Just pulled up a CT-27HL15 Manual

Quote:
This TV is compatible with the following formats. Please set the connecting device to the following format.
Video signal: Format | No. of dots
1080i -> 1920 x 1080i
480p -> 720 x 480p or 640 x 480p
480i -> 720 x 480i
With a choice of downres'd 1920x1080i ('cause you know that ain't really displaying that 1:1) or choosing DVD quality, I don't think you're gonna be a happy camper.

I tried component as well and go much better results, but the best I got was about 3-4" of black bars all the way around the desktop. So I guess I have to live with S-video and 480i for now. THANX! for your help. Is there any point in me trying to us FFDshow useing S-video to improve SD TV and SD DVDs?
