Exclamation Recording quality options not working

When I select the recording quality in the recording options it doesn't work. Example: I recorded "Judge Judy" (standard def) with "good quality" (1.6g per hr) for 30 min and I ended up with a 4 gig file. I have checked just about every option in the setup including the "enforce recording options in schedule" with no luck.

When I look at the "recording detail" it says the format is "MPEG2-PS[MPEG2-Video 16:9 1080i@29.97fps, AC3@48kHz Stereo].

I'm using the ATI in digital mode. If thinking it was something to do with me recording digital channels but I'm at a loss. A 30min program should never be 4g, not for something that is standard def.

Any ideas?

The recording quality settings only affect recordings on analog channels that your tuner has to encode. Digital channels just save the digital stream as it arrives... no encoding is done, so the recording qualities don't affect digital channels.

Is there a way to compress the stream as you are recording it? Maybe an external plugin? I'm kind of surprised it gives you the option to change the way a digital broadcast is recorded if it doesn't effect anything.

If there is currently nothing out there It would be nice to have the option added in the next version. There is no reason 30min standard def episode of southpark needs to be 4 gigs.

There is no way to recompress the Digital file as it's transmitted you have to transcode it after the fact. The reason the file is 4GB has nothing to do with SageTV as the HD encoder simply outputs what is brodcast.

The option is there per-favorite, not per channel or tuner, because of that Sage doesn't know if the show will be on a digital or analog encoder so it let's you set the desired quality and will use that if the tuner supports it.

Perhaps the UI needs to be updated to state that recording quality settings only apply to analog recordings, not digital stream recordings. This question seems to come up to often with the new users and those adding digital recording to thier rigs.

Well, in principle there's no need to show the Quality button if (a) all your capture devices are digital, or (b) the Favorite is restricted to a channel available only on digital capture devices. (In practice, though, there doesn't seem to be an API for distinguishing digital from analog capture devices.)

djpurpose, check the Downloads section of the forum. There may be a plugin that lets you set up automatic compression of specified shows after they've been recorded.
