Newbie CODEC question

This may be a really stupid question but how do you change the CODECs and why would you want to?

I am asking because some of my channels don't have audio (using placeshifter) and I want to solve that and then attempt to get the best sound/picture quality.

I did a quick search for CODEC and got too many hits to be of use quickly

Thanks

I don't use placeshifter but....

Why would you want to change CODECs?
1. The one you are using doesn't work
2. Some can use hardware decoding some can't
3. Some look better than others
4. Some use more CPU power than others

Changing CODECs:
Download GraphEdit and a DirectShow Filter manager. The codec/filter that has the highest merit is the one the system will use. You use the DirectShow Filter manager to change merit levels and you use GraphEdit to test it out.

AFAIK Placeshifter doesn't use traditional Windows codecs to decode video and audio. It uses MPlayer for all it's decoding duty. Unlike the SageTV Client which does use Windows codecs for decoding. For Placeshifter the only real option for acceleration is to enable 3D acceleration in the settings.
