Stx HD100 on a UPS

All of my computers are on UPS since I know for a fact that a power failure can create massive problems that take hours to correct. So here is my question.

Is there any reason to put the STX HD100 on a UPS other than perhaps convenience? I guess what I'm asking is is there anything inside the HD100 that won't survive a power failure?

Karen

I think you would want to have the HD100 plugged into a decent surge suppressor, but I don't see any need for a UPS. Aside from potential spikes and surges, a power failure is really no different than flipping the switch on the back of the unit.

Aloha,
Mike

Actually, a brown-out can take out ANY type of device (I have lost thousands of dollars in equipment to brown-outs), and can only be countered with a high quality UPS offering features such as AVR. Brown-outs happen more than you think, especially after a power failure.

With that said, I personally don't have the HD100 on a UPS either. It would increase the power consumption (battery charging), use more physical space, and add to the cost of the extender setup (high quality UPS units aren't cheap). The HD100 is relatively cheap, so I would rather save my money and invest in a new/upgraded unit if mother nature decides to go after my equipment again.

IF your kids/prego wife depends on the STX, then a a small UPS is great, esp when flashing the unit during a thunderstorm

(dont ask but it save my stx from getting repaired/replaced at sage HQ)

Note that any devices on your wired LAN that aren't on UPS should be on surge protectors. Otherwise the LAN cable can act as a back door by which voltage spikes can get through unprotected devices to fry the LAN ports of protected devices.

Just my 2 cents - but I have all my electronics on a mixture of larger and smaller (APC) UPS units - they are not much more expensive then a high quality surge supressor these days.. And, for the peace of mind, you can't beat them.

Also - units with AVR are better (and a little more expensive), but the ones without do just as good a job. My understanding is a unit with AVR resorts to battery power less then a non-AVR unit. The AVR units have a regulator device to manupulate the incoming power to compensate for smaller brownouts/drops/surges without hitting the battery - prolonging the life of the battery. But, I could have misunterstood it all when I was reading about it - trying to decide to go only with AVR units or not...

Yes, AVR units function like an auto transformer to boost/lower low/high utility voltage. My APC unit can boost a low input voltage (as low as 90Vac) and lower a high input voltage (up to 130Vac) without switching to the battery pack.

In an area with lots of voltage swings, that can help prolong the life of the batteries and save the battery's runtime for an actual power outage.
