Preview in 'recordings' menu

I've noticed that when I bring up Sage (2.0.11 beta) - in the 'Sage Recordings' menu, it shows everything that I've recorded (as it should) - then whatever is on the 'live TV' channel comes up in the preview window, and shows up at the top of the recordings list.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? It seems a bit strange (and not terribly useful if it's by design).

Or have I just set something up funny?

Yes I see it also. I guess I just figured it would be fixed later. Since this is suppose to be "Scheduled Recordings" and the current preview window program is not a scheduled recording. It should probably be submitted as a bug.

This is a side effect of the preview feature. If you are not currently watching a program, SageTV will start just to give you something to see in the preview. Because it is now recording a program, that program name shows in the list of recorded (and recording) programs.

I would like to see the behavior very similar to mythtv, where the preview plays automatically as you highlight each show. I am still on the fence about showing live tv until you highlight a show. I agree that the current live tv show should not show up in recordings. I also think that all of the shows recorded by the live tv buffer should not show up in the recordings screen.

YEah - that's exactly what it is...
it's not showing me what is selected (or nothing) so it shows me some Live TV... which is kinda silly.. if I wanted to see a preview of Live TV - I'd go to the guide.

Based on how things work here, I'm sure it'll get tweaked for the better.... so far this beta is working VERY well for me - WAF is very high.

I'm not crazy about the preview either. I think you should have the option of turning it off if you desire. Hopefully that will come later as the beta matures, or in the Studio when that comes out.

One of my first questions (here) when the first beta came out was regarding being able to turn the preview off & have it only start playing when you want it to. Dan replied, essentially saying there will be some sort of preview options available in the future.

Also note that you have almost full control over the playback of that preview -- you can pause, play, ff, rew, etc. Volume control doesn't seem to work, since those key commands are used for other things in the listings. I simply pause the playback & leave it that way for now.

It seems as though telling sage to preview what ever is highlighted would be very strenuous when flicking quickly through shows. You'd basically be asking it to quickly load multi-gigabyte files in succession. That's just asking for instability, especially with a beta release.

I personally don't see why it's problematic to see what it's recording at first. It's better than a black box up there. Though I'm not arguing that it wouldn't be nice to automatically see a preview of the selected show. That would be pretty cool.

My volume control works on the preview window in both scheduled recordings and live tv. Yours doesn't?

I think this goes back to either a difference in which remotes we are using or a difference in how they are configured. I'm still using the Hauppauge silver remote. The vol+/right button is ctrl+right, while the vol-/left button is ctrl+left. In the recording list, the arrows are for navigating; while during playback, they control the volume.

Since you said volume control works for you in the recording list, I looked into it some more... and you are right: I can control the vol+/- with ctrl+r/e via the keyboard while viewing that list. Unfortunately, that puts me back to the fact that the hauppauge remote has too few keys for everything I want it to do. It clears up that issue for me, though -- thanks.

The problem is not that it shows what it's recording, it's that it will start recording something just to give a preview.

The best solution I can come up with is for the preview to not start automatically. That would solve all of my issues with it. Right now select once causes Sage to start previewing the current selection two goes to fullscreen, if the current functionality stayed the same, without the auto starting of the preview, that would be great.

Also, when the preview isn't showing (it takes ~1sec on my setup) there isn't a black box, there's just nothing, that would be perfectly acceptable for me.
