WHS PP1 update (finally!) available

This is only tangentially Sage-related, but there are probably some Windows Home Server users who haven't heard yet.

Microsoft released the long-awaited Power Pack 1 update for WHS this week. It will show up in the Windows Update in a couple of weeks, but if you don't want to wait you can get it from the MS website right away.

This update addresses the data corruption bug and adds some other features.

I installed it yesterday with no hitches. Didn't even stop my Sage service first, just ran the MSI and everything went smoothly.

Just FYI,
Tim <------ loving my WHS setup even more, if that's possible!

Maybe now people will feel comfortable using it.

I realize the corruption bug was rare and only happened under specific circumstances, but it kinda killed the whole point of using WHS if WHS was going to kill your data instead of protecting it.

I've been running the beta for a couple of months, and didn't notice a thing.

Having experience running beta software programs myself, I find this fairly amazing. They've tested the crap out of the software this go round.

Installed it couple days after release. No problem.

I did the initial WHS beta, out of need and to play with but decided to sit on the sideline for the PP1 beta, would have risked too much of my data.

Sage is working fine, but when I decided to enable jumbo frame, video stuttered. any advice on settings?

Turn off jumbo frames. Your switch needs to support jumbo frames. Not all of them do. I have a SMC switch that does. But my previous Netgear switch did not. Stuttering is the first symptom indicative of a switch that doesn't. If your switch does then make sure your NIC has the latest drivers.

I have a Serial ATA PCI adapter installed on my WHS box and films suffer from stuttering quite badly. Does anyone know if their are any settings which would help improve the transfer rate of the adapter which would need to be set within WHS?
I've disconnected it for now due to the stuttering and all films play ok again, It's a very cheap card made by Pluscom (Via VT6421A SATA 1.5Gbps)

Cheers

Make sure when you use the card it is set for DMA and not PIO. Check the settings in Device Manager under the controller for each channel.

Its currently set to Ultra DMA mode 6, but their are no other settings to change from this to PIO so does this mean its not installed correctly?

I have also just added a second HDD but that doesnt seem to work at all, the only channel that appears to work is channel 1.

Cheers

Ben

I'm running WHS off of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with a Realtek NIC...Jumbo Frames killed all internet access on my WHS box...so I agree that Jumbo Frames is iffy on WHS (or should I say with the WHS hardware you choose).
