Feature Req : Prefer fravorites recorded not in PrimeTime

I was pondering my tuner situation tonight - My single HD-PVR which gets all of my non free HD was recording Eureka at 8:00. We weren't watching said show this evening, but effectively that locked out most of my HD channels for the 8:00 to 9:00 hour.

The exact same show is rebroadcast by SciFi later in the evening. It sure would be cool if a favorite had a setting that would make the scheduler "prefer" certain time slots over others.

When you try to tune to a channel to watch something live in prime-time, doesn't it ask you if you want to cancel your recording of Eureka? Just select yes, the scheduler will then go out and fetch the next available time slot of Eureka. Conversly, you could add what you do want to watch in prime time as favorites, and since they are only aired once, it will delay recording of Eureka until later.

The problem with that approach is that it only works for me - no one else in the family is going to know that the show being recorded will be rebroadcast later that night.

Plus I've got everyone trained to "back away slowly" if they ever get a "do you want to cancel this recording" prompt.

And conversly, the last thing I need is a bunch of favorites. I only record stuff we want to watch - not stuff we might want to watch.

Sage already has the ability to restrict a favorite to a specific time slot. It's under Advanced Options on the Favorite Details screen. Or are you wishing for something beyond that?

I believe he was looking for a method to 'prefer' a specific time slot, but not restrict it to it. I'm not sure how well that would actually work though, as you can 'prefer' the time later time slot, but what if you then tie up the tuners at that time slot? There may not be another, so i dont' really see how it would work.

I think it is restrict it from a block of time.

The current time limits for Favs limit the Fav to a specific Day and/or a specific Hour, so it will only record that Fav when an airing falls into the time selected. (Pages 69-70 of the v6.4-B PDF manual.)

not so much restrict from a block of time, but rather to prefer a block of time.

Bialio is definitely onto something important.

PBS, DSC, A&E, etc. often rebroadcast their prime-time evening shows early the next morning. ABC/NBC/CBS/CW/ETC. never rebroadcast. So, perhaps a check box like,

"Record the second showing instead - if being rebroadcast within 12 hours"
-- or --
"Don't record during prime-time if possible"

would do the trick.

This way other Sage users wouldn't be stumbling upon busy tuners if trying to channel surf during prime-time. This would also be useful if you didn't want too much recording disk activity and fragmentation taking place during prime-time when most of your shows are being recorded.

I normally set these up manually or try the other "workarounds" discussed in this thread when I see multiple shows set to record - but this requires a watchful eye and dedication.

Of course, the BEST option is to add additional tuners.. :-)

I would LOVE this option also. I've been thinking about this also. I guess I could set my favorate priorities higher for channels which only shows once in prime time and lower the priority for channels which have multiple showings later that night or later.

I have the opposite problem which might be solved with the same options. Sage occasionally decides to record a later rebroadcast of the Pirates game (Since they are both marked as First Runs). I'd like to be able to set that favorite to prefer (or even force) the earliest showing.
