How do I get HD in my HTPC
This might be a silly question.
I have been using Sage and 2 Hauppaug 150 cards for SD tv and it works fine. How do I get HD from my MOTO DCT5100 into my Hauppaug 150 cards. MY MOTO has DVI and Component out HD only. Do I have to buy another card ? I can buy a Hauppaug 1600 at Circuit City but the imput connectors don't match. Any suggestions. thanks Ed |

Ed,
If you want to get the output of your cable box into the PC, that's what the HD-PVR is for (see lots of threads here). However, unless you subscribe to premium channels (HBO, etc), it's possible that your cable company broadcasts in clearQAM, which is tuneable with the 1600 (or the 1800 or the HDHomerun, or...). If so, you can bypass your box entirely. |

Expect everything but your locals to be encrypted, anything beyond that is a (temporary) bonus.

Thanks for the reply.
I can receive clear QAM up tp Ch 99. But. !! How do I record on the HTPC HD programing that I receive with the premium cable package I have.. I know I can tune the Cable Box with hauppaug remote setup. I use that now on a non HD cable box just using coax as my imput. The HD box only outputs HD via rgb or DVI, so how do I get this HD into my HTPC for recording. I am not sure sure If I am missing something on this proceedure. Thanks ed |

Here are the current methods for capturing Video, their resolutions (SD:Standard Definition, HD:High Definition), and record capability:
USING Set Top Box (Cable or Sat) 1. Hauppauge PVR-HD: SD & HD via Component Cables (records everything!) 2. R5000 Mod: SD & HD via USB cable (records almost everything!) 3. 1384/Firewire: SD & HD (Copy-protection flags will prevent recording) 4. S-Video Out: SD or SD-Wide only (records everything!) 5. Composite Out: SD only (records everything!) 6. RF-Out Ch3/4: SD only (records everything!) USING a Tuner 1. NTSC only Tuner - analog tuner: SD only (records everything) * 2. NTSC/ATSC/QAM Tuner - analog tuner: SD only (records everything) * - digital tuner: SD & HD (records ATSC everything, QAMnly unencrypted QAM, usually just the locals) * The use of Analog Tuners will soon be limited to analog cable feeds, with reducing lineups over time. ALSO, tuning an HD program on a STB will also output that program in SD on the s-video out. To record HD, you must use a capture card that uses the 3-cable COMPONENT output. RGB interface is probably a COMPONENT OUT interface, very different. Last edited by Conejo; 08-11-2008 at 02:01 PM. |
