Machine help?
My server is acting very oddly since I installed 6.4.8. Hopefully some one will recognize this behavior and give me a hand?
I am currently unable to restart or reboot my server with any USB devices attached to it. The memory check hangs. I can actually stop it in its tracks if I plug in a USB while it's running the POST memory check. Once Windows is up I can attach USB devices. The PITA here is that the USBUIRT has to be re-installed everytime also. (grrrr) AND I have some kind of odd behaviour with IE where I can not access Pandora. This makes the Pandora plug in useless. (Firefox works fine though) I suspect I have a boot sector virus, but I don't really know how to go about finding that out for sure. McAfee is not reporting anything suspicious. Any of you higher hardware gurus have any advice for me? Thanks |

I would venture to guess you have a motherboard going bad. Reason being you're unable to restart or reboot your computer with a USB device plugged in. If you unplug the USB device reboot your server and plug the device back in before a POST does it still stop it? Or put in a bootable CD to bypass your hard drive. Does a USB device still cause the issue? If you had a boot sector virus I would think McAfee would spot it. Can you enable virus checking in your BIOS? That should also catch any boot sector virus. Find another hard drive and do a fresh OS install without any USB devices then reboot and test with usb devices. Make sure to set your BIOS back to default or optimized settings. It's only a guess but I would look at the motherboard.

I agree with gplasky. This is a hardware level issue with the USB bus, either with a single external device, or the motherboard. I see this all the time with external USB Hubs locking up the system on reboot.
ONE of your USB devices locks up the motherboard when it initializes the Host Controllers. It should be easy to identify which single device is the culprit. It's also possible it's a port issue... try swapping the USB device to another USB port. Last edited by Conejo; 08-27-2008 at 06:57 PM. |

I'd also look into updating your bios. Check if there is a newer version of the bios for your motherboard.
