Make HDX faster

My HD extender is sometimes slow and I commonly get the circle of death. Is there any way to speed up the performance? I am using the latest firmware and Sage 6.4.8. I have a dedicated Sage PC with specs in my signature.

What is your JVM heap size reported in Sage?

Are you using SageMC? If so switch back to the default STV and take another look. What you want to pay attention to is if the second and third values are the same. If so, you need to increase your JVM heap size. If those last two values are the same it means SageTV is running out of memory and would be the reason it's running slow.

Yes, I am using MC. Going back to the default STV, I am showing 216MB/266MB/266MB. How do I increase the heap size? Do I need more ram in my PC? I have 1GB now.

Go to regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Frey Technologies\SageTV

Modify the value JVMMaxHeapSizeMB to a hex value of 200 (512 in decimal). This will give SageTV 512MB of memory to work with rather than just 266MB and should allow things to run smoother. Before upgrading your RAM I would try running that for a while and see how it is. Just because it can use up to 512MB doesn't mean it will. But a RAM upgrade might be advisable.

Should be ok as long as the second number never hits the maximum. On my server I actually increased my heap to 768MB because I found it hovering just below the maximum. I decided it would be prudent to give it some headroom.

I would like to comment on this.

I was having no problems with my Java heap until I upgraded to the lastest version of SageTV (6.4.8). I do not use SageMC and I have 2 HD Extenders and 1 PC client. After the upgrade I started getting slow response and the spinning circle. So I changed the heap size to 512 MB.

Since the new version and changing my Java heap to 512MB I have to shutdown SageTV on my server about once every 2 weeks. It seems the new version might have some memory issues or is a memory hog. I didn't have this issue using the beta before 6.4.8 was finalized.

What version of Java are you using? I have the latest version of both SageTV and Java and have no problems running my server for weeks and even months on end without issue.

Which update though. The latest version is 1.6 or rather 6. But the very latest version is 6 update 7. Make sure that's what you have. In SageTV it should say 1.6.0_07. There were earlier versions of Java 6 that had some memory leaks that were eventually corrected.

I updated my Java from _05 to _07 and I haven't had spinning circles since....only been a few days, though....And my JVM Heap has decreased...

the heap was 477/533/533...so, I was going to increase it, but after I did the Java update the heap has been 191/219/533....

So, happy camper for now...

Thanks,

Gary Ellis

My setup with 2 PC Clients (lightly used), 2 HD100 (heavily used), and 1 Placeshifter (heavily used) was not super slow or crashing constantly (would crash once every couple of weeks if not restarted), but it could use a little improvement. So I installed the latest version of Java and up'ed the heap size to 512MB... I am at 199/302/533 now with 2-3 clients in use...
