My trick for a workaround for #1 is to use Windows Scheduler to schedule a reboot of my server PC every night at 4:01am. Seems to keep memory leaks and hung devices at bay. Been doing this now for > 1 year (even before I had the HDPVR) and my system is much more stable. I had backed things off to once per month, but find the daily reboot to be the most reliable.

I also use an APCC battery backup / surge protector and plug in the STB, Server, and HDPVR into the protected power and that seems to prevent some devices from being turned off by a power failure or bump.

HD-PVR works fine with HVR 1800

Deacon, do I read your server specs correctly? Are you using the HD-PVR with the PVR 500? I thought the HD-PVR didn't play nice with other Hauppauge devices.
I have 1 HDPVR and a Hauppauge HVR 1800 Card and only have 1 minor issue.

The HD-PVR IR.exe cannot be resident when I activate the signal monitor for the 1800 card. Other than that no issues. Win XP SP3 HTPC
