Survivors - BBC HD - What sound do they use ?

Hi,

First, my setup is an HTPC with an HDMI cable linked to my LCD TV.

I recorded the show "Survivors" on BBC-HD , but the sound of the series is not right (by this, I mean the bit of recording before the show - BBC woman's voice introducing the show - is OK) . I also recorded other programs on BBC-HD and the sound is fine.

But for this series, it only plays background sounds, and the conversations are faint or non-audible. It looks like it is a 5.1 signal but I am only picking up the "rear speaker noises".

I tried the menu and went to "Audio languages" and I had a choice of :

- # 1 eng
- # 2 nar

By choosing the second option, the sound was working fine, but I had a rather annoying narrative lady explaining what was going on between scenes, not the best way to watch the show.

Is something wrong with my setup or has anyone else noticed the same ?

It was in ac3 5.1 so the top audio choice should of been ac3 5.1

Sometimes my HD-100 extender doesn't correctly pick up a 5.1 track so I get a messed up sound. It's a bug that it's had since i've had it but I've not got round to putting in a support requested for it. Sometimes changing channels back and forth works but not on a recording.

I can't comment on a PC based client because I don't use one anymore.

OK, so if I set my audio encoder to AC3 it should do the trick for next time ?

FYI, here are the details of the recording, showing the sound difference between "NAR" and "eng" :

Format : MPEG2-PS[H.264 1080i, MP2@48kHz Stereo NAR , MP1@32kHz Stereo eng ]


So MP2@48kHz works fine, but MP1@32kHz is corrupted ....

Don't think it's a codec issue. I think it's sage because the format shouldn't be MP1@32kHz Stereo, it should be something more like ac3@48kHz 5.1

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem with bbc hd. The dreaded talking woman. If I change the sound it just gives me crackling noises. If you find a solution please let me know.

BBCHD has always had the correct audio stream previously but last nights Survivors had the narrative audio track, whichever of the audio streams I chose.

I think BBC HD has changed in some way. I'm still using the standard software (non-beta) and this problem has just appeared. Stange thing is Luxe HD is fine and so is Chanel 4 HD most of the time (it does show this problem occasionally) I think we all need to contact sage support.

Ahhh I am glad I am not the only one .

I raised a defect with SageTV, but they replied that they wanted logs of the fault. In the memo, they explain how to turn on/off logging, but I am not an expert and don't feel confident to do it.

Also, I am not sure if they want a log of the fault when it is being recorded or played.


Here are the instructions if someone has time/skills to follow them :

Can you get me logs of this.

To enable logging, disable any custom STV's/ plugins you are using, close
SageTV and the service if running, then open up your Sage.properties (with
notepad) file in your Frey Technologies or SageTV folder. Add this line to
the properties file: "debug_logging=TRUE" Without the quotes and the word
TRUE must be capitalized. Then run SageTV and recreate the problem. After
you recreate it, you can then close SageTV. Now look for this file in your
Frey Technologies or SageTV folder: "sagetv_0.txt" Send me that file. Do not
paste the text, but rather paste the whole log file. I want it as an
attachment. The quicker you can reproduce the problem the smaller the log
file will be. You can also zip up the log file to shrink the size down
considerably. In Vista the Sage.properties and the log files will be placed
in C:\Users\"your user name"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program
Files\SageTV.

Sage creates a new log file each time you run it. It will also name the
newest log file "sagetv_0.txt" and the previous log file will be named
"sagetv_1.txt" and so on. Keep this in mind as you send us the log files.
Also, Sage will create a new log file after one reaches 10 megs. So the
"sagetv_0.txt" log file is always the newest. Zipping up the log files will
shrink the files considerably if they get too big.

Then send me a copy of your system information. Go to Setup > Help > System
Information screen and hit the Info button (defaults to CTRL-I on your
keyboard). A txt file named "SystemInfo.txt" will be created in your SageTV
folder. Send me that file.

REQUEST DESCRIPTION: Sound issue when recording a show. The sound was
broadcast in ac3 5.1 mode and should have been recorded as "ac3@48kHz 5.1"
or similar.

Instead, the sound was recorded as "MP1@32kHz Stereo "

When trying to play the recorded show, it only plays some kind of background
noises (birds, music, etc ...) but not the people voices/conversations.

BBC HD has had the narrative audio track enabled for the past week which s very annoying, I'm not sure if its a Sage issue or a BBC problem.
I've also noticed that it said "BBC HD Preview" at the top of the screen last night. Very poor in my opinion as they should have sorted out these problems long ago.

Good old George, always wants the logs...
In reality, the logs never say much about this sort of thing, I think the tssplitter.log is the one Qian needs. George should just pass this sort of stuff straight to Qian and not waste time IMO.

This issue with the narrative audio has been fixed in the past with SD with a Registry fix to force only a single stream to be recorded, but I don't know if it would work here.

The narrative track has always been there, you just probably never noticed it since sage defaults to ac3 tracks where available, or it used to!

I believe the last show of survivors was wrongly broadcasted, and they wrongly put the narrative voice on audio stream #1 .

FYI, previous shows of survivors had the narrative voice on audio stream #2, and normal AC3 sound on audio stream #1.

My original issue is different, I think I have a problem passing AC3 sound through my HDMI cable. I don't think it is a SageTV issue, but more likely a Nvidia driver issue (although last set of drivers didn't fix my problem)...

Was there ever a fix for this? I'm getting it on a few Sky HD movie channels and no matter which audio track I choose the narration is still there.
