Whatever happened to...

The Blu-Ray player with Sage software embedded?

I was at a CES or a CEDIA show probably 1 1/2 to 2 years ago and saw a demo of a Pioneer BR box with Sage built in.

I would LOVE to have one of those boxes.

So this would be an extender with a built in BR player, not unlike how some of the MS extenders have a DVD player built in?

Think of it as a Blue ray player. Then think of how companies are adding Netflix and Rhapsody, etc streaming capabilities to the player. It would be cool to have it be able to be a SageTV client.

Does anyone know if that demo was running in BD-J? If so, just about all current BD players could support a SageTV client.

I would pay a decent premium to get a Blu-Ray player that did a good job as a SageTV extender as well. Throw in Netflix Watch-now and Pandora on it and you would have a Huge hit.

Now back to my reality. It could happen obviously, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I won't hold my breath either.

When I was at the booth, there wasn't anyone there that could (would?) say much about it. But it was a nice, higher-end Pioneer BR player with SageTV running on it. And it was fully functional.

We can hope

If I remember correctly (keep in mind my memory is suspect these days) I think Jeff said that the Blu-ray demo with SageTV on it was a "concept" demo. Which would mean SageTV and Pioneer were both showing what could be done not necessarily what would be done. It shows SageTV is trying to get it out there on other hardware (or they were then at least) but since it never happened it also shows there are challenges for SageTV to get this to happen.

Still possible, but one of those things I'll have to wait until I see it.

I'm getting a ps3 for xmas (actually i have it now, but I'm not alowed to play with it ) and I can't wait to play with bd-j. One of the reasons, i created the remote api, is because I want to see if I can actually get the ps3 to play a sage video using the bd-j api. Maybe other people have already tried, I don't know, but it would make for cool little project over the winter

Failing that... my backing up plan is to simply use the ps3 as a upnp client to sage.

You're absolutely right. It was a concept thing. I was just hoping... Especially since there wasn't a peep about it since.

Actually, just put Sage on the Samsung BD-P2550 (Best Buy model) and you have all this. I personally tend to stay away from Samsung due to past experience but still it's very close to your "dream"...

If only I knew enough to do that

Actually though I have considered purchasing that model. I seem to always find other ways to spend my cash unfortunately.

It is the same as the 2500 that is sold everywhere and has Netflix streaming built in. However, for the 2550 that is just sold at Best Buy direct Pandora playback was added:
