At the risk of confusing things further...I was under the impression that you were trying to plug 1 USB to Serial adapter from the computer (serial port) to the DirecTV Receiver (USB) and were having issues communicating to the serial port. I'm suggesting that you stop trying to use your motherboards serial port and just use the USB ports (so they will be identifiable, like my pic). To do that, you'll either need 2 USB to Serial adapters with a Null Modem adapter to connect them, or a Serial to USB adapter and a Paterson Device.

you were correct, that is what I thought I could do from reading through all threads. I have now ordered another adapter cable and will but the null in the middle.
Thanks,
Roger

no clue of actual evidence. but I have been using Win7 on my own machine and it works great with old XP drivers on other stuff like a scanner. SageTV works great on Win7 as I've installed it as server (for playing around - without HDPVR) and as a client.

Hello Brian,
Monoprice sent me a different adapter even though I ordered the same part number from the invoice a week ago. After playing with it for a few hours, I got it to work, I think. Still testing.
Thanks for everyone's ideas. I still don't know why 1 would not work like everyone else.
Roger

weel, with 2 adapters, you would be at least like me, and mine works! If you have trouble with Sage's serial control, you could try the EXETuner plugin. I use that, but only because when I did my install, sage's serial control didn't work on the new receivers. That, I I believe in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it, mantra.

USB Serial Controls won't start under WHS 3.0

I've been using two monoprice setups (as recommended in this thread) to control 2 directv receivers for 18 months with very few problems.

Until recently (when my HP mediasmart server system drive crashed!), I was running under an old release of WHS.

Temporarily I switched to my desktop to keep Sagetv running, and the usb serial contols worked fine under Windows 7.

Having now replaced my HP system drive and upgraded to WHS 3.0, I cannot get the usb controls to start - seeing the dreaded Code 10 error in Device Manager.

I've tried numerous other prolific 2303 drivers, to no avail.

Switched back to my windows 7 desktop setup and all is well - but I need my server setup back!

Anyone have any ideas, or seen this problem?

Not sure what WHS 3.0 is but Windows Home Server 2011 is a 64 bit OS. I'm not sure what version of Windows 7 you're running. You'll need certified 64 bit drivers on WHS 2011.

I had a problem when I went from WHS to Win7-64. The USB to serial cords I purchased (from original post) when I started used the moss 7703 chip. I was able to download the driver from the following link.
http://www.moschip.com/mcs7703_downloads.php

The issue with the above driver is that it is not digitally signed. It will install but Win7-64 will disable it on the first reboot. I found a work around but it is a bit complicated. I suspect it will work with the new WHS if it is 64 bit.

Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider is a program that will digitally sign the driver and allow it to run on your system. Link below:

Hope this helps.
