This means that all decoding and encoding operation previously done by software and very CPU dependant will be able to be processed on NV4X chips. We are not aware specifically how Nvidia plans to do that but it sounds promising.
All encoding/decoding done in hardware on the board. Does that not sound sweet or am I misreading something?

Think about gplasky more long the line of Multi-Source and Multi-Tuner it be impossable to do because there only one AGP or PCI-X slot but killer why it not sweet sounding is must becuase everything build in one device "AIW ring any bells here" will not be able record at some time you play game etc, etc.

That was also my concern. They also didn't mention a tuner. But, the more computers with capture cards the better the market for computer base pvr's.

I think I'll stick with my Tuner cards, but I am very interested to see what the NV40 will bring in terms of Video proccesing (deinterlacing/scaling) and HDTV output.

My thought was leave the tuner cards doing what they do for TV. But wouldn't this card be much better for playing DVD's, Divx, mpeg2 recordings, etc? Anything that we now normally software decode would be handled by the card?

What is so sweet you say...?

Uh, if you have not noticed Nvidia claims to output 1080p on the NV4X cards. Now that will be impressive. Of course you will need an monitor to handle it.

Almost any decent video card can to 1920x1080p, it's 1080i that's tricky. But yes 1080p on a 1080p display will be incredile

What are the implications of HDCP mentioned in the article? Will this mean I can record high definition shows (assuming software support) and then play it back on the same machine? I find the HDCP reference to be odd. Wouldn't that necessarily mean that it has a DVI input??? Aren't DVI streams the only ones protected by HDCP. I haven't followed firewire, it may be HDCP as well.

On the other hand, if they are suggesting that their DVI output capability is HDCP, that suggests trouble in my experience. My Samsung DLP, currently hooked up to my Radeon's DVI will cack if the source is HDCP. I'm not sure about other TV's. My Scientific Atlanta HD STB will not allow DVI to my TV because of HDCP. I hope this won't be true of this new Nvidia board, 'cause it sounds pretty good.

How do we know this is full blown decoding? nVidia claims this now for MPEG2 and their current line of FX cards.

In this instance there are claiming encoding and decoding done by hardware so it probably means full blown.

We will have to see. Here is their current line from their website on the 5200...

"Integrated Full Hardware MPEG-2 Decoder
Delivers full-frame, full-screen MPEG-2 video on your desktop."

I hope it is full though .

I assume this means that they will be capable of HDMI/HDCP output. I doubt there will be DVI in on these. I see no real point, unless this would work like the DVD-A decyption HW on the Audigys that allows them to play DVD-A.

the one thing that i really speculate is that any encoding capabilities may necessitate the use of the FWMM software since it's a lot more than just a dvd player.

it's a bit coincidental that FWMM is at RTM stage in testing and that nv4X cards are also in that same/similar time frame.

could potentailly be a nice little combo package for playback.
