Backing up wiz.bin and sage.properties

Is it okay to back up these files while SageTVService is running?

Properties should be fine, and I can't think of any reason why wiz.bin should be any different. They're just text files as far as I'm aware.

wiz.bin is actually SageTV's database that stores the metadata, favorites, history, etc. I believe you need to stop the Sage service before backing that up. I also think there were some scripts developed around that and determining if Sage was recording. Search the forums.

I back up the files while SageTV is still running. If I happen to be doing it manually, I just make sure the file isn't currently getting updated. Otherwise, my backup program just does so as scheduled.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum that lists some people's backup utilities for these files.

How do you determine if "the file [wiz.bin] isn't currently getting updated"?

Note that I said I'll check it if I'm manually copying it, so it is simply a matter of hitting F5 in Windows Explorer & checking the time stamp and/or file size.

Some of the backup utilities I mentioned might check the file info too.
