New to sage with linux

Hi Everyone,

I do use ubuntu so I know a little about linux, but not a lot.

I have 5 dvico hdtv5 cards that I was told a year ago would work with sage and QAM, but now I find out they will not... even though I bought an extra sage server license just for that machine, I can not get it to work, and sage has told me my only option is to now but another sage license for linux... Well before I do that I would really appreciate some input on installing and running sage on linux.

My current system is sage server 6.59 running on win xp. I have another comp running xp that I use as storage... I originally planned to use this machine as a sage server/ network encoder. I actually got it to work with the dvico cards but only with ota, not qam.

So... thinking about redoing that machine to linux, and installing sage server as a network encoder to work with my other sage server and to operate the dvico cards and to be network storage.

Does that make sense?

Will it work?

More specifically, how hard is it to get sage set up on linux, preferably ubuntu?

How hard is it to get the hdtv5 cards to work with sage?

Will the sage server on linux act like a network encoder with my other xp server? or does the other server need to be linux? or does network encoding just not work with linux?

Any tips on getting the network storage to work with linux?

I know I could try the linux for 21 days and test it, but since I use that machine for my network storage, I do not want to mess with that machine until I have a good idea it will work.

Thanks in advance!

I think it makes sense, it should work.

Ubuntu 32Bit is easier than 64-bit, but not by much

This will depend on how good your PCI bus is, I think.

SageTV on Linux didn't work for me as an encoder due to path issues. But that was a long time ago.

Which way?

No trial for Linux.

I have a WinXP SageTV Server on 6.5 and a Linux (Ubuntu) SageTV Server on 6.3. From the Windows Server, I can add the music, pictures, and videos directories as a Media Center Import Directory, via Setup. This integrates the files from my Linux box beautifully.

I can also use the Browse Media files to access Network directories, including the TV directory on the Linux box, and play recorded TV files directly. Just make sure you have Samba working to export those directories and a fast enough network connection. I think this is new to 6.5.

Network encoder is not the same as Samba share. Here are some threads with discussion on it:

Bottom line: Last I looked, Linux master Windows slave works. Windows master Linux slave does not. But it has been a while.
