How many sage users are there?

I've been wondering, how many installations are there of Sage.. Whats the percentage of Sage vs Myth vs Popcorn vs Windows home theater?

We can only guess, Sage never puts out numbers, but I'd say "tens of thousands." I couldn't even guess the percentage vs the competition.

Rough guess for Windows Media Center is probably in the hundreds of thousands, for people who actually use it. It's probably in the millions for actual installs.
MythTV is definately in the tens of thousands, and probably a significantly larger userbase than SageTV. BeyondTV, is probably somewhere in the same range as SageTV, though, I would guess fewer users in all.

You think so? Sage users? (not trying to be snarky - honestly surprised.)

I figure that a majority - not nearly all, but a majority - of Sage users have posted at one time or another on this forum. The member list is just shy of 13,000 people, but I figure there are quite a few who tried Sage (maybe a long time ago) and dropped off a long time ago, or else who joined the forum to ask questions and decided not to buy. Just scrolling through a few pages of the member list, there are TONS of screen names I have not seen in the last year, since I have been a member... of course, there are probably some posting exclusively in forums that some of us (me) don't read - such as the foreign country forums and such. But I think it's hard to believe that thousands (or tens of thousands) of people use Sage and never post, or have never even joined the forum.

I dunno, my gut tells me that active SageTV users are somewhere in the range of 8,000. But I could be horribly mistaken.

It is hard to tell. When I first got Sage I set it up on the computer that had Beyond TV and then MCE previously on it. I used my existng tuners (nVidia Dual and ATi HDTV Wonder). I came to the forum to find out how to disable MCE so Sage could have the tuners. I didn't join or post here, just searched and found my answers. Two weeks later I got the first HD-PVR. If it hadn't been for the HD-PVR and the initial headaches I might never have joined or posted here. Just watched and learned.

There are others I'm sure, who use fairly simple setups and never have to ask a question and therefore never join the forum or post.

Do you mean the sage software, or the whole package? Software plus hardware?

Of all the people I know who use SageTV, only 50% have joined up on the forums and 2/3rds of them post very infrequently. Whether or not that reflects the SageTV user population, only SageTV LLC would know.

The reason I asked this was I was thinking about the future of HTPCíng... Knowing that Microsoft probably holds the lion's share due to their popularity, I am wondering what's down the road for Sage.
I could only imagine that as this market get's more popular and more competitive there will be mergers of smaller companies, or buyouts of larger ones swallowing up the little guys. As we have seen over the years in the tech sectors.

I really like Sage and I don't want to see it merged/bought out and dumbed down for the masses. But that's probably the natural life cycle of technology.

This is only my second post ever on Sage's forum; and, I have never posted on any other forum. But, I do visit the forum every day for tidbits of wisdom from those who are less shy about posting. I suspect there may be others like me, which would make it difficult to estimate the number of Sage users by the number of posters.

On a fairly consistent basis I come across posts here with the phrase, "Long time user, first time poster" or people with a post count of 1 (or very new join date) saying, "I have been using Sage since version X and am wondering if..."

I would guess there is a silent majority out there that never have a need to post on the forums. A good majority of any problems that are possible have posts with solutions someplace on the forums (multiple times in a lot of cases) so there would be little need for a good chunk of people to ever post. I know I used Sage for several months before registering a username on the forum.

When I first got Sage I was one of the silent majority, mainly because I had a fairly simple setup and it went together with such ease.
However as my setup changed and got more complicated so did my need for help... and now I am pretty much making my own problems by tweaking and constantly playing around that I need more and more help. I suppose I could just let things be, but I am a glutton for punishment I suppose

Hee hee. You and me both. I had not even posted or registered on the webiste until I had my Sage for quite some time. Now I keep reloading plugins all the time in some vain effort to squeeze more cool-factor out of my sage.

I like Sage too, and I think the people who created it deserve to be rewarded. In all likelihood, though, they work long hours for not very much money, like most tech startups. Realistically, a buyout is probably their best chance of a decent payday in the foreseeable future.

I understand that but would hate to see it. One of my previous trys at an HTPC was based around Meedio. Yahoo bought it and it was as good as dead.
