Grrrrr. To pull the trigger or not......I keep thinking I should buy another Sage licence....
It's too bad that you can't get the bundle with a HD200 and Sage Linux license. I have really wanted to try it out.

I am not sure about that. Periodic discounts are not an easy thing to manage.
Should they provide price protection? If so, how far back should price protection go? If they go 15 days then the guy that bought it 16 or 17 days ago is going to be peeved. If it's 30 days, then what about the guy who bought it 31 days ago? I am not sure that there is a way to handle this that doesn't peeve a small group of recent purchasers. I bought my first one about 15 days ago. I would have liked to have got the discount but that's just bad luck on my part and I am not going to sweat $20. I am sure happy about the $80 I am now going to save (and even happier since that's over $100 Canadian, as I live in Toronto). But, I would be peeved if I bought 4 units the day before the discount. So, should they just never provide a discount without price protection so that recent purchasers are not peeved they didn't get the discount? Or, should they just provide some sort of price protection regardless of the period, so that at least they are showing some goodwill in that respect? How would you suggest the company have handled it? (We know they're listening! )

companies manage this all the time. best buy, fry's, target, etc. and not just large retailers. startup companies do it as well.
in any case, since i got stiffed, i had to make sure the discount was posted here so as many potential purchasers would see it. i missed out on $45 but so far you guys have saved $160. Last edited by damage; 03-28-2009 at 03:33 PM. |

Yes they do, but what is your suggestion for how SageTV handle it (or does anyone else have some ideas)?

pick a grace period and offer what i would have saved as a discount on a future purchase.

Providing a credit towards a future discount to purchasers who bought recently (15 days, 30 days, etc.) should be quite palatable for SageTV. It would not impact SageTV's past revenue at all and create a significant amount of goodwill for those who are the unlucky position of having just purchased but now find that others are getting discount that was just granted a mere few days later. It could also be a rebate that one has to send in, rather than a credit. And, the time period during which either a credit or rebate can be used could be time limited (to 3 mos, 6 mos, a year). And, we all know that credits are not always used as someone may not purchase within the applicable time period. And rebates are even used less often not only because people don't use them within the applicable time period but because they forget to send them in (or get frustrated because rebate processing companies seem to somehow 'forget' to send the checks back! - which is a bad business practice reducing goodwill), further reducing the impact on SageTV's revenues. However, I think a credit for those who bought in the last 30 days and redeemable for 1 year would be the best solution. So, what do you say SageTV?

Just ordered one HDTheater as we only have one decent television in the house. I was just talking with the family the other day and had decided to hold off on purchasing one until they went on sale. This coupon code is close enough to a sale for me. Thanks!

"How would you suggest the company have handled it? (We know they're listening! ) "
Real simple, on the Web page advertising the Product simply put in big letter "USE code xxx for $20 discount". Don't thing anyone would have missed that. Plus they may have sold many more. Just tinke of all the potential customers no reading this thread.

Well, my question was more directed to how to handle the people who bought just before the discount was offered.
I just got an email about the discount directly from SageTV.

This thread is not the only way to find out about this. I got an email announcing the promotion, and I'm guessing the OP did too. I assume this email went out to everyone in their customer database, so if you didn't get one, you might want to check your spam bucket, and make sure the email address in your forum registration is valid.

which brings up another point...why not mention the discount on the order page? or the front page? this thread already generated $1440 in revenue for them...
jphhughes should email orders@sagetv.com and ask them to give him a credit since the coupon code was valid friday when he ordered. or cancel his order and re-order since they probably haven't shipped it yet. Last edited by damage; 03-28-2009 at 05:04 PM. |

People, it is $20 off the HD theater and $25 off the bundle. I really don't see how you could have afforded another HD theater unless you bought 8 of these. Did you buy 8 of these? I understand if you bought 2 or 3 of these, it is hard to swallow because it is $40-60 but this happens all the time with every other company and usually people chuck it off as bad timing, why is it so different in this case? I'm not sure of the reasoning for the coupon but if they wanted everyone to get it, then it would have been reduced on price for a short amount of time instead of printing a coupon. I see the idea of retroactively modifying the price when it is within the return dates and it hasn't been used because the customer can simply return the product, but beyond that, I don't see why it would apply. Sometime I feel bad for SageTV because it feels like they try to be as understanding as possible and then it comes around and bites them in the behind with stuff like this. After all, this is a company and they do need to make money... especially if it is a niche market. Just my thoughts. |
