Exclamation WARNING to FiOSTV Users!

On April 2, 2009 there was a recent firmware change on the HD receivers (QIP6200 here) and likely the standard receivers as well which requires the menu key to be pressed when bringing the receiver out of standby.

Add a menu, pause 1 sec, left arrow before the channel digits are sent. You should test the timing of this of course.

This issue was brought up by another SageTVer to me, but I wasn't seeing it, until my power went out today!

According to VZ techs there is no time out value to go into standby and a user should only experience this when turning the box on.

Just to clarify, the "standby" mode only happens immediately after a power on or reset? But once I've tuned or otherwise woken up the STB, it should never go into standby again (until the next power on)?

Thanks,

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning behind this standby mode which only kicks in after you turn the unit on which usually means you would like to watch TV at that point.

EDIT:
Upon further investigation it seems it only displays this message when the box is technically off so I guess the sequence of Menu - Exit could be now considered a discrete on command perhaps.

Previously, when my box was "off" I got no video signal at all. This actually came in handy - I could detect when the box was off since the recorded file size was always zero.

Are you saying that when you power the box off you are still seeing the "standby" message?

The tech on the phone indicated they had too many people (he said technologically challenged) whose power toggles would get out of sequence with the TV and cable box. He also said they are evaluating the need for a toggle in a firmware update as they are now getting a number of calls from the other end of the spectrum.

To address our issue, though, they could do any one of:
  • Never go into standby
  • Make it an option to never go into standby
  • Revert to the previous state when a "reboot" happens
  • Wake up when someone presses any key, not just Menu

Another thing that might be useful is having distinct IR sequences for On and Off (separate from Power) even if they are not on the remote.
