Beginner Question on placeshifter

This is my 1st Sage post. I guess that makes me a beginner.

I'm trying to understand Sage products so I know what to buy.

Does placeshifter require software installed on the PC which is watching the streaming video/live-tv?

I ask because I use Orb at present and it will stream to a browser, so I know that's one way to do it (and one pays for a licence to turn it on for each concurrent user.) Obviously, streaming to SW from Sage that runs on the remote PC is another.

Having special SW can be a pain. Grandparents don't like installing SW; using the browser that came with the PC is pretty much it. Hence the question.

Yes, PlaceShifter is a software that needs to be run from a PC; however, you can install Placeshifter to a USB stick, and run it from there.

See http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...aceshifter+USB for details

Thanks for the info. I was getting that impression from searching here that something had to run on the remote system, but needed to double check.

As for running from USB, does this imply that nothing is installed into windows (in my case XP SP3), be it the registry or c:\<whereever>? Just double click on the icon on the <usb drive letter>:\placeshifter.exe

From searching I also saw that people have been able to get Orb to co-exist, so that will take care of the Blackberry and grandparents.

Thanks.

That's correct.

Yep, you can do that as well; I don't think you can use the TV features of Orb with SageTV, however (might cause conflicts if Orb tries to grab a tuner). However, you can certainly watch previously recorded TV shows va Orb. You may also want to setup nielm's webserver to mark shows as watched.

A note, if you are looking simply to stream through a web browser, some of this functionality is actually there in Nielm's Web Server. It uses VNC I believe to stream the video to you.
